Default Renault 16 hatch button surrounds (rubber grommet as replacement)

    Hi guys,

Wasn't really sure if this is the place to post....

I arranged to buy another 16 this evening (1976 TS) from Ed B's brother.
On inspecting the car, I noticed that the surround for the hatch button had been replaced with what seemed to be rubber rather than plastic.
Ed mentioned that there were some previous posts mentioning that the correct size grommit could be cut and adapted to fit, and that its likely that is what had been done. Looked like the original, and a nice snug fit.

I have done some searching of the forum with no luck.

    Suggestions anyone?

    Hi David

I got a similar article for my 15TS door buttons from Caravelle Imports

If you've got a spare silver ring that fits under the front door window winder of your 16, please let me know. I only need one

    Default Rubber Grommets

I think most 16's by now have a missing or defective push button surround on the hatch. The plastic ones seem to shrink and allow water in which is a problem I faced. I tried the rubber grommet approach but unfortunately rubber has more adhesion and a snug fit only serves to impede the movement of the plunger and hence shutting/locking of the rear hatch. If it is loose enough to allow adequate movement it will also allow water to enter. I ended up returning the black plastic ring and placing some black tape around the lock and surround. Not overly pretty but kept the water out. You may get lucky with the rubber grommet but I tried a number of sizes and approaches but could not get a happy result.
You could try a piece of black plastic tubing (irrigation tube?) inside a grommet and use some black silastic to attach the the plastic tubing to the rubber grommet. The plastic would provide a smoother surface for the plunger to slide against. Good luck!

    Default Boot Gromets

    [Hi all,

The door gromets are obtainable from Caravelle in Melbourne, and a 1inch wiring gromet will fit the boot perfectly.

The boys in Holland have reproduced both the door and boot ones and have them for sale
