can u put a standard r 17/15 box in a renault 12 without swapping much and if u do have to swap items what do u swap . the car has a 1.4 motor with early model g/box car is a 75 model with a 1.4 flywheel and clutch so what would i have to speed or is there no advantage to fitting a 17 /15 4 speed or is it better to fit a virage g/box to it please advise

The spiggot shaft and of course the bell housing need to be changed. An original 15/17 box should have a final drive ratio of 3.54, as opposed to the standard 12/1.4 ratio of 3.77. The very first 12s had a 4.125 ratio but are hard to find. The gear ratios have small changes, but all would be called wide ratio boxes.
For normal use with a modded 1.4 the 3.77 works best for most activity. The taller 15/17 ratio is OK, but you need to travel at 120kph to reach the torque peak of the 1.4 in top.
A friend has had the tall ratio and lightly modded 1.4 ( ported head, compression, cam) for many years and loves it, but the car spends most of its' time on the open road.
