Default RCS 172 Pre-purchase inspection (VIC)

    hi guys- my first post

i'm quite interested in purchasing a 2002/3 RSC.

i've seen a couple, but all seem to have damage in some way or another.

anyway, i was looking at a 2002 on the weekend.

The person selling the car was Steve -a Renault enthusiast who owns his own workshop specialising in Renault.. he told me the name of his workshop- 'RenaultSport' in Richmond VIC. He seems like a top guy and loves his renaults.. a real fanatic.

anyway i cant seem to find his number in the whitepages, does anyone have the contact details for 'Renaultsport' or has used his services previously, as i will prob get him to inspect my future 172 (prob wont buy the car he is selling as it had its roof keyed)

Or does anyone have any other decent Renault specialist for pre-inspections and servicing..

as its a 2nd hand car and Renault charge an arm and a leg, i wont go to the dealer to service the car.

plus i feel that specialists seem to take alot of pride in their work, rather than a dealer apprentic mechanic who doesnt give a crap (not all like that but there are a few).

    Thanks guys

Sounds like Steve Kalenderian, I think his business name is Renno Sport.

As for only taking it to a "specialist" check that they have the correct diagnostic equipment. From reading the various forums, a number of software upgrades are needed for the Clio, and I doubt that there would be too many specialists who would be able to upgrade the car. Not taking the car to the dealer within the warranty could also jeopardise the warranty if it didn't have the required upgrading.

Other people who could probably check your car are:
    French Connection at Airport West
    AutoParis in Box Hill
    Alpine Affaire at Ringwood

Simon, thats the Steve, he must be pretty good or infamous for a SA guy to know him. just wondering how you heard about him.

Software.. hmmm maybe I’ll take to the dealer every 30,000km or so to get the lastest software. But will ask the specialist if they have the software.

i’m pretty sure servicing outside the dealership will not void your warranty, but I suppose when you claim warranty, the dealers will not go the extra step to assist you when pushing Renault Australia.

Anyway I heard the servicing cost at the dealers are horrendous. $700 for a 60,000km service (no change of timing belt), $800 for 100,000km service (timing belt but not spark plugs). I didn’t even want to ask about the 120k service.

Also why do the spark plugs have to be changed @ 60,000 if they are platinum?

Makes our BMW E46 servicing look very cheap in comparison.

    thanks again

hehe, since i bought mine 10 months ago, i have no zero software updates. everytime i go the dealer (a lot) i asked then if there were any new updates int erms of softare. No was the answer each time... hahaha yes... service. oh well. 02 clio should still have wanrranty, so it doesn't really matter for now. Anything broken, you can take it back and fix it at a dealer. From ym experience, they won't fix known problems till you actaully experience it 4 times and get them to fix it... so maybe an independent place is better cause if they fix it, they get paid.

umm, hey we aren't on another planet you know

I remember his name from Wheels magazine (I think it was Wheels!) back in the 1980's when Alpine Affaire first started up. To a teenage boy, those cars were hot, and I probably read that article 50 times

I've met him once or twice since then, at Vic car days etc.

not saying you're from another planet, just unlikely that ppl from interstate would know a workshop owner from VIC.

so i guess he's been around.. he certainly knows & loves his renaults thats for sure.

i'm going to check out a 2002 with 20k km with an SS exhaust tonight.. wish me luck its not flawed

oh, is it easy to get realiable (extra) power from a RCS?

    chip, intake, exhaust etc?

i seen a lowered RCS and looks better.. was lowered with Eibachs.. would that be detremental to the handing?

i've also noticed UK 172s come with 16s, instead of 15s are the springs/suspension the same?

    oh re the software upgrade..

if it was the software that damaged any equipment, they renault will be responsible for the repair, as it was the original software that came with the car, if you changed the ECU, then i guess its your problem

Yes you can get additional power from all/any of those. But, NA tuning is a lot of trouble and you ahve to be very patient. It took me a few months just to find the correct aftermarket intake. Anyway, these things aren't like toyotas so there aren't a billion diferent parts you can get. But there still are a tone of stuff. If you are tinking exhaust I'd consider custom work to keep the tips invisible, or do it properly and have the tip/s semi-submerged in a restyled rear bumper.
I feel chip tuning is a must if you get both intake and exhaust. Even with an intake, the car is runing leaner then before. You should be able to make 10/15 KW gain with this stuff, but they would be at the top end. And you still need to make sure your mid range torque don't suffer.
