Default Renault '5 Turbo' - for sale on drive.com.au

    Whoa, nice car eh?

Not sure about the price though? $39990 for a 83 model car? I respect that it's a legendary car and all...but 114,000k's isn't a tiny number either...? Well, actually it's not too bad for an 21y/o car...compared to my 75,000k's in a 2 year old car!

BUT, can anyone shed some light on this? Is $39k a good price for the turbo 5? What were they worth back in '83?

    Anyhow, here's the link!

Sounds like a reasonable price to me. It'd sell on the world wide market for that price. The picture show the car to be a *REAL* R5 GT turbo, ie: the mid engines phsyco fire breathing thing. I think there was only a very limmited number of these made wasn't there

Most Renault 5 turbos are the little FWD sedan. The body is just a bog standard R5 with tacky plastic crap hanging off it.

If the car is stock and in decent condition, then the price is justifiable, at least IMO. Wish I was 'brave' enough to put my money where my mouth is.

This particular example was imported by us in 1993 and after 10 years in Qld it has just been traded on an Alpine A610.
I'm bloody jealous of the owner, moving up to an A610 from a R5 Turbo!

And this A610 turbo is the one that was at the Grand Display in Brisbane yesterday.

I'd say that the $39K is certainly in the ballpark for a genuine 5 Turbo in AUS. It isn't just any 1983 model Renault like a Fuego :-)

Back in 1994 when Alpine Affaire originally sold the subject white 5 Turbo the price was $40K, so minimal depreciation over 10 years, obviously excluding all holding and maintenance costs.

For a comparison, check out these prices of 5 Turbo's for sale from a French based site, then think about, transport, duty, conversion to RHD.

Then again, if you could justify all those expenses to actually buy and enjoy the car in Europe before bringing it back, buying an OS based car could be fun and more valuable purely from a sentimental point of view!

No.. its not a R5 GT Turbo.. its a 5 Turbo 2. The 5 Turbo 1 and 2 were the mid engined versions of the first series Renault 5. Before them came the front engined 5 Alpine/Gordini (name depending on the market). The 5 GT Turbo was a mid-late 80s turbo front engined version of the Supercinq/Super5/series 2 R5.

None of them have tacky plastic stuff hanging off them if standard from factory.

The previous owner had the motor and drivetrain fully reconditioned at Alpine Affaire, maybe 2 years ago, and it has done minimal Klm since then. Ken still laments selling the R5 Turbo 2.
Sales of these special cars are to a limited few Renault enthusiasts that actually have money to have a rare toy, and an everyday car. These people are a rare breed in Australia.

With respect Alan an "everyday car" i dont think so. They dont drive too well on the road as a everyday commuter etc. in fact they drive crap and they are not that quick anymore...in the 80's yes however there are a few small Jap cars that have better specs.
Dont get me wrong i'd kill to own this car [in fact i was contemplating buying it a few years ago ] but after doing the sums it didnt stack up to $35k.
It is best belonging to a museum or carshows IMO

The R5 is a real road rocket and a very tidy unit Ken did hate parting with it but the Alpine will take some of the pain away!

I'd have this as a daily driver and be very happy indeed, wonder if they'll trade my Clio.......

Had a quick look on www.carclassic.com and these things are highly sought after, race versions with history going for upwards of 165,000 euro's (no thats not a typo

That 165,000 one could be a bit rough in the traffic but I'd give it a go . Should have power in the range of 450hp if at original spec being a Maxi.

The 5 Turbo Maxi was basically a hyper version of the 5 Turbo. It had a 1.5 litre motor as opposed to the 1.4 litres of the "normal" 5 Turbo.

A Stock RS Clio does 0-100km/h in around 7.2 seconds. Not too bad and shows how things have changed over the last 20 years. The V6 Clio does it in around 6.5.

    Hey Ren,
From memory that white R5 only had 140 ish bhp and from my magazines a 0-100 in approx. 7.3 secs.
Great in its day however a Toyota Starlet import has similar figures and is a road car. The R5 is a rare car however every article i've read said it was a pig to drive .

Are you sure youre not misinterpreting?? Every review ive ever read of the turbo 2 has said it is very "raw" to drive.

    Heavy clutch and brakes.

heavy steering that you have to fight.

but direct and precise in all respects.

isnt that how a true drivers car should be??
