I would just replace the one making the noise, they last for a long time as long as the boot does not have a hole in it and let out the grease inside.

I would also make sure that the replacement has a good boot on it, otherwise you will be doing it again shortly.

Sorry don't have any R16 shafts anymore.

I'd email this guy: Renault 16 club Tilburg - Geert (Tilburg, the Netherlands)

You could buy the wreck that was making us unhappy a week or so back? It has two!

    Bush Mechanic strikes again
Put the LHS shaft on the RHS and noise will disappear.
Always marked LH and RH shafts to always reinstall this way for some extra life

Why was there a lack of grease? There us usually plenty of grease in these joints!

Was there a hole in the boot?

The grease in the "sealed" suspension ball joints can harden up too, leaving the joint poorly lubricated. The symptom is occasional sharp cracks that aren't related to any apparent looseness. I've fitted grease nipples to the R8 ball joints and grease every couple of years and the problem disappeared.

Must have been a very old driveshaft if the grease hardened up. No holes??? Perhaps it needs more use.

If drive shafts are worn you can swap them to the other side and you will only notice the wear in reverse. My R17TS has had the worn shafts swapped many years ago and they are still going strong. Sure there is a bit of a clunk in reverse but you don't do many K's backwards.

You have the original correct driveshaft for your early 16. Looks like your brake hose could do with some untwisting.

I see you have the old style shafts, they have done well to last this long.

this 16 was owned by one person for most of its life..I have a full history including delivery receipts...when the owner died it was put away for a number of years hence fairly low mileage

Sounds like a nice car with all the original documents and service history to go with it.

Its good that you were able to fix the original driveshaft hence keeping the car original as possible.

Hi. I have 4 of the later driveshafts, but I am not sure if they will fit your early car. I'm sure someone else on this site will know.

at the moment it seems my problem was solved with a liberal application of grease
