Default R4 tube style bumpers- outside diameter?

    Hi all,
Can anyone post the outside dia. figure for the tubular bumper bars as used on early (1962-63) R4's and Fourgonetes? I will have to make up a pair as there appear to be none to be had second hand in OZ. The rear brackets are going to be an approximation but I'm sure they'll pass muster.
    Thanks.
    Ron

Ron, are you a member of Club Automobile Francaise in Adelaide? Also have you asked Simon? I expect he'd know more of this sort of thing about an R4 than anyone I know.

    Thanks guys,

David, I would appreciate the measurement when you have the time.

John, I haven't yet joined the local club as I was waiting to have the car closer to being roadworthy before doing so. I have also tried a couple of times to arrange to see Simon and have a good long chat with him, but to date I have not had a reply from him.

Thanks Ron. He'll turn up in the end I'm sure.

The measurement of my chrome plated rusted mild steel tube is 35mm diameter.
I measured one only because I made an assumption that front and rear would be the same.

Ron, are you getting replacements made? If so, I may consider getting a set as well.
Are you going chrome steel or stainless?

    Hi David,

Very many thanks for that measurement! I was going to have them made in mild steel, unpainted, because I am restoring my R4 to "basic" or "standard" R3/4 specs. This model of R4 was quickly discontinued after 2 years for the R3 and another couple of years later for the R4. They were distinctive for their lack of chrome trim, no door cards, and painted bumper bars. I have found a source for the grey plastic door handles on them so will be fitting those after the car is repainted in "Templiere" grey, one of only two colours available for the R3/4 - the other colour was "Pyramide" grey. I figured I am not being too radical by going with this version as the car is clearly a cobbled together car with bits from a 1962, 1963 and even later models (including a 12 volt upgrade).

I will let you know when I have a quote for the new bumpers - I'll ask about the price in chrome steel and stainless for you.

    Photos to come soon.

    All the best.

    Ron

Great to hear your restoration objective Ron. I once saw one of the most basic spec cars, in grey and lacking the rear side windows, in of all places the Sahara Desert. Yours will be great.
