    Default R10 Axel Query?

    Iíve just reinstalled the rh rear axel away on my R10 round eye project.

    I notice that it freely spins even when a gear is engaged.

    is it possible to have fitted the axel without inserting (blind) into the universal joint?

    i note for completeness that the other (lh) axel was not in.

    is this normal?

    if not what could I have done wrong?

    That is normal. If the other side isn't fitted yet or even if it is fitted but in the air, the wheel assembly on one side will always be free to turn even in gear. This is the way a diff operates.

    This is not so with a locked diff, it will turn with the wheels in the air and in neutral (if the engine is fitted) but won't turn if in gear unless you're very strong and nearly the same with a LSD. Depending on the strength of the LSD it will do the same as the locked diff if you feel it by hand but when you drive the car the weight and strength of the car as a whole will slip the LSD when turning.

    Phew! Maybe I have just go used to my locked diff in the R8 and thought it was 'normal'.

    When you spin the installed half shaft check if the other side is spinning the opposite way. If it does, all is good, you have installed the half shaft correctly and you have a correctly functioning diff as Frans said.

    Yep, just checked and the other side spins also but in the opposite direction!
    So all good
