    Default R8G wheel colour code

    Hi all,
I know the answer to this question has been posted here before and I apologise for asking again.

Could someone please give me the colour code for the standard R8/10 wheels? I am refurbishing a set for my R8G. What is the preferred tire size?

    Thanks,
    Paul.

    Hi John,
That is the old size and is correct. I have been told by my tire man 165/15 will be the closest he can get. Just wondering what others use on their cars.

    Thanks,
    Paul.

165 X 15 are not really a good size. They limit acceleration although they do allow low RPM cruising. I don't know about R8's but don't work on the front of Floride's they rub and reduce the turning circle. A mate had new 165 X15 on his Floride rear wheels and quickly removed them. 145 X 15 Nankans are available. May be not they best tyre acording to 4CV but I have never had any problems with them on my car. If you want Michelin 135/145 X 15 are usually available from UK delivered with in a week. Floride S rims are painted with "Grey 667" Renault colour which is really an off silver colour or perhaps more aluminium colour. I used a touch up pack from super cheap that was a Mitsubishi colour and it looked pretty close. I would think that R8's of the same period would have the same colour but Simon will know for sure.

Wheel colour that is close but perhaps not accurate if you want the car to be strictly original. Holts Duplicolour Auto Spray DST 59. Platinum/Champagne. Mind you I don't think there are any cars left with nice clean unfaded original paint to really compare it with. Unless you can get the original Renault code mixed accuratly. You really need Simon he'll know for sure.

They are one of the Michelin Classic sizes I think. Available therefore from Stuckey in Melbourne for example if I'm right. New structure and compound compared with the originals.

Did the R8 Gordinis come with 4.5" rims like the 10S cars?

    No doubt others will reply....

Mine are painted now but I found the original colour on the insides. Carefully matched and they still aren't quite the right colour despite care, but compared with before pretty good....

In Europe they did but never with the “safety ridge” for tubeless tires like on the Australian R10S

The Australian Dulux paint code is 562.12110, a French code is Aluminium 605.

Having the code is one thing, finding someone who knows how to interpret it as well as accurately mix it is another.

I'm thinking the French code may be a better bet nowadays. It will likely be in an international code catalogue (such as Glasurit) and their formulas may be "corrected" to actually accurately reproduce the (older) colours needed. One of the excuses I've been given for inability for a formula to accurately reflect what you want is that the various tints and bases have changed from the original lead based formulas. I've no idea if that is correct or not.

If going for Michelin XZX from an Australian supplier, ask for pics of (or eyeball) the date codes on all tyres before handing over any money. From experience you may end up getting stuffed around otherwise. I don't begrudge the price, but do want to get what I'm paying the full amount for.

The French 4.5" rims have a groove around the outer circumference of the hubcap "nut", instead of plain like the 4" rims. And as above, the Australian (ROK stamped) 10S 4.5" rims have the safety bumps and are of thicker steel.

Thanks for the info Simon. I will see how I go at my paint supplier.

I have seen the tires spoken of in this thread on a UK site and are about AU$900 for 5 tires plus freight to Aus. Thanks for the date stamp heads up. Again I will talk to my tire supplier about tires and see where that takes me.

I have seen a set of Gordini wheels with the groove around the Hub nut. These were fitted to an Aussie Gordini currently being restored in Newcastle NSW. Were these fitted to the Aussie Gordini's?
Where would I find the ROH stamp on the wheels?

    Thanks,
    Paul.

All of the 8 Gordinis in Australia would have originally been fitted with the French 4.5" rims with the groove. The Australian ROK (Rubery Owen Kemsley - predecessor of ROH) 4.5" rims only came out on the 10S. Being post 1970 (10S introduced May 1970), and the introduction of Australian Design Rules requiring safety humps on rims.

The ROK stamp appears on the inside (tyre side) of the rim along with a date stamp.

I'm guessing your tyre supplier may contact one of the Australian based Michelin Classic agents, so just make sure he gets the details of the production dates as well, before ordering them.

When I got the wheels (14 in total) they came with a Sunburst brown R10. I was supposed to collect this car some years back however the owner couldn't make up her mind what to do and had been sitting under pine trees for 15-20 years. The property was recently sold so I did some quick negotiating to save the engine, car and rims from the crusher. The car its self is really of no consequence (except for parts) however it is fitted with a Bruce Collier built 1.4L engine which was originally fitted to Marg Colliers R8 and is complete with side draft Weber, extractors etc.
There are 3 gearboxes, cross members and boxes of other various parts still in the shed. I also picked up 3 of what appears to be Collier made rally wheels.

Only 14 wheels? Wow. Are any of them 10S out of interest?

Yes John, 6 of the wheels are 10S 4.5 inch.

I went to my paint shop today- Auto West in Bathurst and gave them the paint codes Simon posted. The modern paint code for the wheels is- "Aluminum 12110" which uses the last part of the Dulux code. The paint is only available in acrylic so 3 coats of base and 3 clear coats will be required. I have already tried a sample on one of the wheels and the colour looks to be a perfect match.
The code on the receipt is- Class 3 GRP 12110 Aluminum Renault.

6 precious wheels there! Great re the paint match. I had mine done to match a good sample on the inside of the wheels and they look great but aren't quite the right shade of grey. Still, it goes OK with the Rouge Trinidad.

Good one! It makes sense really, given that the same colour would have been used on things like silver wheeled HK/T/G/Q/J/X/Z Holdens and the like. And restorers of those would require an equivalent of the old colour formula too.
