Default Brock and Renault racing connection ?

    Hi
Just sitting at the computer watching the Bathurst race. Looking at some Renault historical information. And I came across some interesting connection, as you do sometimes, linking Brock to racing a "Renault" based car ??
Anybody like to guess at it ???

The win by Brock in a 12GL, in a race to launch the Kleber V-12 tyre?

I bought Kleber V12's for my Holden Gemini when I was 18. Only because they were called 'V12' and they sounded German.

    Default Confession time :(

    Hi
I must confess that I actually asked a trick question. But I did think it was possible that a person like Simon might find a real answer. And he did
    My trick answer was thus ;

    THE BRE CONTESSA 900 GT
A rare image of Peter Brock at the wheel of his first Hino

from this site which i stumbled across by mistake !
Brock Racing Enterprises - Hino Team Samurai
As we all know the Hino's were a follow on from the original Renault 750 and 850 designs they made under licence. You did know that yes
    Jaahn
PS not a handsome car like the originals, for sure !!

Different Peter Brock. Pete Brock was an American, his BRE team were famous for racing Datsuns and won many SCCA races and championships in 1600’s and 240z in the states. They also prepared cars for Paul Newman which he raced with great success.

I can’t recall the team ownership history, but it is possible Newman bought into the team, hence it may be the forefather to the Newman haas empire today!

Speaking og Hino Contessa. They are supposed to be Renault based but their engine looks unfamiliar:

Hino started making 4cv's under licence but the Contessa was there own home grown disaster. Influence by the R8 but entirely theirs.

    Hi Reidar
Would this link shed some light on the matter. We only had a few of them here and it is a very long time since I have seen one. Possibly only have seen two in my life. Hino was not a known car name in Aus.

The Hino Contessa (especially the 1300) was actually very successful in motorsport, both in the USA and in Japan.

There is one superbly restored Contessa in Perth (owned by one of our Renault 4CV Register of Australia members) and one of his in driveable but improvable condition (my words!) has just been sold to NSW. Another Contessa is owned, under restoration, by another of our Register members in Victoria. These are all the last 1300 Contessa model, which won a design award for styling - clearly not the curious sedan shown racing further up this post!!

They are interesting cars, with some interesting engineering - the rear suspension pivot is remarkable for example! You can see the Renault underpinnings, with a Hino truck division engineering overprint. I'm not sure what they weigh but an R8 would be a fair bit lighter.

When we lived in Mount Gambier in 1972 there was a blue one in regular use - it's the only one I ever saw before the Perth restoration.

    Clearly not a huge success......

Apparently they assembled a few hundred in NZ. My Perth friend has a Hino mate in Hamilton and his (in Perth) is an NZ car restored to NZ detail - great dedication to detail.

    Thanks Frans. Moved OK?

There is still a (tenuous) link in there. Pete Brock was the designer of the Shelby Daytona Coupe, a replica of which was the car Peter Brock was competing in when killed in the 2006 Targa West.

Bob Jane was part of that connection when Brock drove the R12 at Calder. Apart from being the Calder promoter, Bob distributed Kleber Tyres through Bob Jane Tyres so the R12's had to race on Kleber Tyres. Thankfully Bob did not make Brock run the Klebers on the Monza.

What I find amazing is that the top sports sedans and touring cars of the era driven by our heroes of the day, that we all used to drool over now look like they were built in a back yard shed by comparison - because they probably were!

The WTC/group A days of the sierras and M3’s probably signaled the start of the professional era.

When I was an apprentice and had my first R12, I ran Kleber tyres on it for awhile. From memory they were a good tyre

There was also a few of the tradesman had Klebers on their cars too and they also were impressed with the Kleber tyre

KB this discussion probably should be in the Motorsport section however I must correct your assumptions about that level of professionalism during that era. The BMW seen in many shots of the Brock Monza was build by McLaren for BMW north America. Hardly a back yard operation. In Australia it was prepared by the JPS team BMW, not a backyard operation. The Porsches were full works cars prepared by Porsche Cars Australia. One, the K3 935 was driven by Alan Jones only two years after he won the F1 world championship. It held the lap record at most tracks in the country. Colin Bond drove the second car. Barry Lock (ex McLaren) and many other former F1 Engineers were directly involved in car construction. The Jaguar was done by Alan Jones former Williams F1 Engineer who still owes me a case of beer BTW. The touring car Taxis of the era were the backyard operations but that is the product most Aussies followed and still do.
