    Default ZA History, Racing R8

    Hi All,

These are photos from Jody Scheckter's supercharged R8. Jody went on and became F1 world champ for Ferrari in the late 70s I think.

If I'm not mistaken this was one of Alconi's developments and was a real giant killer. I'm sure there are a few stories to be told about this car and at the moment a duplicate is being built in ZA for Jody.

    Regards, Frans.

The Excelsior Motors signage refers to Jody's father's (Max Scheckter) business, a Renault dealership in the main street in the city of East London.
The undertray up front doesn't appear to provide any down force, probably to direct air flow to front radiator.
I've seen this car beat a fully race prepared 2 litre twin cam Escort.

Correct Henry and that Escort's racing number was Y151 that ruled the tracks in ZA. it started out with a 2000 FVA motor that was later changed to a 2000 BDA. (BDA stands for Belt Driven Type A) Some useless info for you. It also beat the 2000 Superformance Alfa Romeo belonging to the multiple Saloon Car champ Basil Van Rooyen.

With the crossply racing tyres of that time Jody was also nicknamed "Sideways Scheckter".

    Side hinged front 'bonnet'?

I've seen 'aero tape' used on more....errr.....'precise' cars than this one, but in this case it's probably just for aesthetics! Seeing the insides through the panel gaps isn't a good look....

Maybe the aerodynamics work better that way. Let some air through rather than push it with the brick. Use everything that helps a little bit.

I disagree with Frans on the engine type of the Y151 Escort. After the FVA engine was banned as it was not a production engine from an S.A. assembled vehicle, The tuning wizard, Willie Meisner fitted a Lotus Cortina type twin cam, which he stretched to 2 litres, after being told by Cosworth that it could not be done. This story could go on for ever, but is best kept out of the Renault forum.
