    Default URGENT!!! R12 gearbox Perth.

A participant in the Repco Reliability Trial Rerun has broken his gearbox (Virage 1.4) outside of Kalgoorlie and is getting the car shipped to Perth tonight.

Does anyone one have a sound gearbox surplus to needs?

Iíll be shipping one down on Sunday if thereís not one in Perth but thatís getting late.

Also so can someone please tell me the sizes of all four seals on these boxes as Iíll get him to find some in Perth tomorrow. Side, input, and selector shaft seals.

    Cheers

Wish I could help but can't as out of town for a few days and it looks as if Ray's onto it.

Broken gearbox??? Smells of energiser springs. If so, it will be broken, good and proper!!

12s are getting pretty thin on the ground.

    Hope all goes well guys.

    Well Froggers,
The R12 went out of the workshop at 21:00 this evening, and after a spirted drive around the long block, Greg drove it back in the workshop and they packed all their bits in the car and they were gone in a blaze of headlights to the hotel , for eat sleep and the start of the stage to Geraldton on Monday morning.

Serviced gearbox exchange and serviced driveshaft exchange (supplied by Shoji) and all reassembled to drive around Australia's north.

Best of luck the Greg and Mal !!!

Good pickup Gecko, and well done.

Had you not found a box and driveshafts in Perth, the earliest I’d have had stuff to you would’ve been lunchtime today and you’d still be at it now I dare say.

Any idea what caused the problem? They said they hadn’t lost synchro prior to the failure and they heard a clicking noise for a while before it broke.

I have a bunch of 12 driveshafts (not sure if any are good, but worth a try). Free to good home with any other 12 bits anyone care to unearth in my garage.

    OK ,
Their first run this morning was 2 sets of 3 laps at Barbagello Raceway, all went very well, except the Dunlop rally tyers have such a pattern on them that it sounds like a big 4x4 on the new surface of the track. And then head north for more fun, have not heard any more so far.

    Not so fast...

The boys got to Geraldton and mere meters from where I work the car failed again, same symptoms. A loud crunching noise coming from the front LHS. They trailered it to my place and we worked long into the night replacing the LHS hub and driveshaft. There was a noise coming from the front hub area with the car raised so I figured that might have been the source of the problem. It wasn't, on the test run the car ground to a halt and we pulled it home on a rope.

We suspect that the gearbox may not have been at fault - it is unlikely that two gearboxes, irrespective of age - would fail in the same way within 48 hours. Besides when the gearbox was pulled out at Rays' place, and the bell housing removed there was nothing to suggest carnage had occurred therein.

On the other hand two driveshafts seem to have failed spectacularly.

I'm thinking failed engine mounts, select shaft mis-alignment...

    Any thoughts?

Hopefully the driveshafts will tell the story.

Has the front end been modified (such as to provide negative camber) causing the driveshafts to hyper-extend/hyper-contract? So, the spider either parts at the inner joint under compression/hard cornering, or clashes with the inner joint on the full droop of suspension (say if the car has been raised – this would be rare, as the shaft generally ends up contacting the chassis rail, which causes issues in itself (as well as witness marks on the chassis rail)). Also, if the clip on the outer joint hasn’t been secured properly it can come apart, or the clip itself will jiggle around causing problems.

    Thanks Simon,

The failure last night occurred at <40 kph on a flat rd. Nothing exciting.

The car suspension is standard with the exception of shocks - not raised. (I've raised the suspension in my old 12 and never experienced a problem, well, except on the side where the frame was bent as well...)

Car ran fine to Gero, cooled down and failed. Same as what happened outside of Kalgoorlie

Camber appeared normal, I'll check with the boys. I didn't see evidence of reversed ball joints or camber adjustments on the LCA when under it last night.

I've never broken either a driveshaft or gearbox in close to half a century of rather spirited driving of these cars. Even with failed syncro energiser springs, nothing except crunchy gear changes.

What do you have to do to break these gearboxes?

What bad luck. They got as far as Kalgoorlie, so something must have changed in those days from the start of the event. Obviously the car has done many km without this problem. Now twice, presuming it IS the same problem.

What can change? Rubber mounts? Not much else unless something has broken. Hmm. Best of luck with it. Bugger!! It can't be hugely obvious or Ray would have picked it up.

My comment about synchro springs refers to the unlucky situation where one of the broken bits falls between rotating gear teeth, then something has to give, and it is the alloy housing. Clearly it wasn't that problem!

Have they checked all the mounts yet? Late last year I popped a drive shaft because of mis alignment of our new custom engine and geabox mounts. Luckily it was in a carpark when turning hard. Popped out at the gearbox joint

Standard front suspension, nothing done to the camber or ride height.

New bushes and ball joints wheel bearings too. Car was in the care of Alpine Affaire prior to leaving.
