Interesting JohnW. It still takes some time before oil pressure comes up when cranking without firing and it won't fire until I pump on the gas. If I do pump on it too early it does make a clatter until pressure kicks in. I'll will have to look at seriously - soon. Get my head around it 1st.
So far, all the extras I've added to the engine, I've removed the electric fuel pump, the NoDis ECU system and 1 side crankcase vent.
I may have to remove the whole oil cooler, pipes and remote filter as well.
But I've added the 123Tune which is great (still adjusting curves until I can afford to take it elsewhere) and put back the mechanical fuel pump.

Has the oil been diluted by raw petrol overflowing through the carbies?

A build up of swarf from the rebuilding process? Clattering sounds serious.

I'd be having a chat with the rebuilder. Too many things seem to be going on.

I've been talking to the rebuilder, we have something to check.

Ditch the Ryco filter, get a Purflux and repeat a cold start.
There have been so many horror stories about them i don't trust them.
For $16 get a quality filter.

    How are things going here?

Sorry for stealing your thread, but what sort of oil pressure would be "normal" operating pressure on this engines?

Oil pressure should be as follows according to worksop manual M.R.156:

    Idle 2 bars (30psi)
    4000 RPM 4 to 5 bars (60 to 70 psi)

My engine runs between 2.5 to 4.5 Kpa (x100) on my gauge
I haven't addressed the issue yet. I have another seal for the cam on it's way. I'll do an oil & filter change at the same time but have a good investigation to the oil cooler setup.
