    Default Racing R8 in ZA

A very nice photo from Arthur Eggar in ZA. Winner???? All he said was 10 laps of hare and hound.

The R8 was the hare and the Capri was the hound, going by the photo and if it was only 10 laps.

Cindy is driving Ken Halls R8 a year ago

"Cindy Evans-Finney Hi Morne. It is Ken hall's R8. Not a Gordini but still goes really well for its size. Awesome car."

All I know her as is Cindy Evans, as I use to trail ride with Brian (Dad) in Rhodesia. Now he knows how to make a Renault BOOGGIE.......

The Finney came much later, and he knows how to build Renaults as well. Has (had) a R10 with BIG Sierra motor.

OK seeing we have a thread going here, one of the cars I built body moulds for. They were used about 5 years later to build this ...

    Oval track racing.

    Pieter B R5T-Mazda Champ Car sml.jpg

Front engine, rear drive, amazing power 2Lt Toyota 3SG. Tube frame in a R5 shell with all glass body. Guys name Pieter Bronkhorst. AF "Baby Renault"

In the late '70s early '80s, he had a beautiful R8 with a 16TS in it, went very well, then we built a 1605 with 10.5CR with Fiat pistons, and a Big 4 speed box, then IT WAS FAST !!! used to out drag Holden/Chev Monaros (modified) and out run them on distance runs as well (Kempton Park to the round about at Voortrekker Hoogta and back about 60km).

    From Pieter's Facebook page :

"I used a Toyota 3sgte motor with high compression forged pistons made for me (to my spec) by Arias pistons in the USA. (I sent them plaster of paris moulds of the crown of the pistons)The head was hihgly modified to take bigger cups (over valve springs). Compression ratio 14;1 Special cams and valve springs was also used. Viper made my branch. I used BMW M3 throttle bodys with Hilborn mechanical Fuel injection like the V8 Sprint cars. Spark was by means of Magneto from Cesna Plane. It sounds so sweet.at 9500 rpm .....!!! The gearbox was a Getrag from a 530 BMW and i used a specially made flywheel with a button clutch. With this car I won the Regional Hot Rod Championship......."

South Africa and Rhodesia always had a very strong reputation for fast Renaults.
Good to see it's still happening in SA.

I was fortunate enough to race against both of them. Once I overtook Cindy down the Midvaal pit straight but fell off soon afterwards, never caught up to her again as she was too quick .

Ray, I don't know if you are aware, but Brian has passed away a year or two ago. I remember at the after party of one of the races, we were standing at the fire in the park and suddenly we saw Brian's Mercedes pull out and disappear down the lane....stolen, and Brian shouting out "my leg, my leg!!!" He raced with his wooden leg and the expensive hi-tech leg was in the car. Obviously he still had his "wooden" leg on.

That was naughty!! I never did things like that!

I grew up in Valhalla, neighboring suburb to Voortrekker Hoogte and I don't think there was a more slippery road than around that round-about in the wet. It was our drifting "oval" track when wet. It must have been soaked with diesel from all the military hardware using it as well at the time.

    Frans,

Not sure why, but we never saw speed trap cops on that freeway, and some times of the day there was very little traffic. that was probably why. But you had to have a strong car to run the 60km flat out. like racing on a large oval, and the Sierra and 807 motors would just keep cranking. Saw a Cortina Lotus kill itself just after the round about, very sad state, holes every where .....

I remember Brian Evans racing his Gordini at Swartkops circuit near Pretoria, with his artificial leg. He spun out twice but still won the race,, against more modern cars such as Toyota twin cams, Datsun SSS, and Golf GTI, etc.

A few photos from ZA days.

The first photo isn't a very good quality one but that is Cindy in the front then me, and then Dennis McBeath at Midvaal Track. That was good days when we had 3 Renaults in one photo.

The second photo is a close-up of the ZA car being off-loaded.
