688-02 was also used in the 1100 R8.

Assuming the guess of early R8 for 689-01 is correct. The pick of those engines would be the 10S engine but the head off the early R8 engine is getting rare and worth keeping too.

We must wait of course for Rob to confirm tomorrow, but in the meantime here is some light reading:

Great page very comprehensive. Didn't find the 15 TL though, may be I didn't look in the right place.

The r10s had the 8 port head like a 12 and the 956 i think, so would that mean that 688-09 is a 10s engine?

Now we will have to check Mercedes Benz engine designations in the future

Both the 10S and 956 had 8 port heads but were different. The 956 head is preferable as it raises the compression ratio and was a popular mod back in the day. I believe the 10S head is different to the 8 port 12 as well.

Sorry guys thought about it when I walked past the 956 cc engine but had a friend in tow looking at something else. Will try and remember tomorrow.

Yes you probably did but I did look at my 689 - 01 and it is a 956cc engine from an early R8, one of the very few left as the block usually buckled and were replaced early on in their life by Renault, or by "who ever" later in their life. One of my R1131's is replaced by a 10 block but retains all the other 956cc bits like head, sump and manifolds. The other has a Caravelle block and retains all the 956cc bits but this was probably done by Renault as it has a large number of dobs of coloured paint on various nuts, bolts etc. I have it on good authority that the factory did this with warrenty engine swaps.

Yep well done RTT. Wondered when someone was going to do that. I may have had the list somewhere but have saved all this sort of stuff haphazardly over the years and can never find it when wanted.

I have a 689 in my Manic GT car and was wondering if the blocks of the 689 had equally spaced bores or if they are the same as the 688 blocks ? I am hoping they are equally spaced like the 810 blocks ??? If they are than the heads would probably have the equal spacing between cylinder's !

I do not really want to tear another motor apart to just satisfy my curiosity.
