    Default Vale Phil Thompson

Sad to relate that one of our Fellow Froggers, Phil Thompson, has died in Adelaide after a short illness.

    He posted here as R8philSA.

We'll remember Phil for enthusiastic work and campaigning in his R8 and ongoing work on his barnfind "Barnie".

Phil was a lovely man and will be greatly missed. The Renault 4CV Register of Australia has written to his wife Sally and she'll get a link to this post so that she can look later and see any responses.

Thank you for posting this John. I was very saddened to hear of Phil's passing this evening. He was a true gentleman, true to his faith and incredibly keen and excited when it came to his beloved R8's.
It is a shame he didn't quite get "Barnie" over the line before his passing. I don't know if he managed to get the engine roaring into life yet, but I understand he had a helping hand working bee to get the shiny impeccably detailed engine back in. I can imagine the delight he would have had in firing up that little beast.
Here's to a great man and devoted fellow frogger. Cheers to Phil
    cheers,

    John

    Yes, sad to hear.
I had met Phil a number of times at various musters and chatted via email and AF often.

I echo John's (J-Man) sentiment - I hope Phil got to hear Barnie roar into life before he passed as a testament to his work.

I shared his excitement at finding a great toy to restore in "Barnie" and enjoyed following the progress through his posts. Only met through here and unfortunately not face to face to discuss our similar projects. A sad loss.

I hope that Barnie does get finished to live on as a memorial to Phil.

Phil will be sadly missed but never forgotten!! i was fortunate enough to talk with him only a few days prior to his passing.
His enthusiasm for life and renaults was incredible. can still see the look on his face when i took him for a squirt in my r8.i will always think of him when i go for a drive in my r8.

I am a relatively new member of AF (Oct 2017), and I didn't know Phil, but was inspired and very impressed by his meticulous work. I extend my sympathy to his family and friends. I'm sure that his name and legacy will live on for a long time within AF.

For any Froggers in Adelaide who don't get the message from other sources, Phil's funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. next Tuesday, 26th February in the Hope Valley Uniting Church. The church is on Grand Junction Road, at the corner with Austral Street, in the suburb of Hope Valley.

For those going, it would be nice to go by RER or some other French car.

    Thanks.

I was fortunate enough to have met Phil on many occasions, he would come and visit me at work when he visited his son nearby. We would shoot the breeze talking all things R8/R10 and as mentioned before, you could see the enthusiasm he had about is two R8s.
We never did get to go for that spirited Hills drive with Brian (Potenz) we often talked about. His attention to detail on his cars was exquisite, I was always envious of the photos he'd email me on his R8s, especially Barnie.
I was saddened and shocked when his wife Sally informed me of Phils passing on Tuesday. The Renault Community has lost a great bloke and mate, and he will always be in my thoughts when I take "Clive" for a spirited Hills drive.

    Rest in Peace Phil.

I never met Phil but I remember when Phil joined AF and I counselled that his modified R8 wouldn't meet the then very strict Code of Practice for Historic Vehicle Registration in SA.
He didn't seem to mind at all, he just wanted to get out there and enjoy it.
As others have said, his enthusiasm was clear in all he reported on and you could sense his excitement as 'Barnie' took shape.
Such a shame that he never got to take it through the 'twisty bits'.
Condolences to his family and friends.

So so sad. I met Phil for the first time at the Geelong Revival. A thorough gentleman and wow so much enthusiasm for all things Renault. His work was spectacular but Iíll never forget the passion in his voice as he chatted not only about his car but also mine.
Iím really sad that the world has lost a good bloke.
    Condolences to his family.

I too met him at the 2017 Geelong Revival and he went out of his way to introduce himself to me as I was running my R8. He told me about starting his Barnie build and was full of hope and enthusiasm.

Sadly we weren't able to compete R8 v R8 at Geelong as he had hoped.

I am sure he is now making his peace with the Renault God.

    RIP Phil.

As the RER devotees age, we are bound to lose more and more of us from natural causes, and I doubt if many of the 4CV/DauphineR8/10/ enthusiasts are under 60 years old.
I loved Phil's work on Barnie and I hope a similarly minded person can complete his work to the same standard. May he R.I.P.

Phil was an enthusiastic and much respected member of Club Automobile Francais. I am not surprised that so many others have passed on their condolences. At the funeral there will be a special Guard of Honor involving French cars so those who can could bring your French vehicle and be there by 10 30 please.
