Default Speedo cable leaking oil from a cut in the plastic outer sheath

Speedo cable leaking oil from a cut in the plastic outer sheath and it's black.
This was a freshly rebuilt gearbox and has been leaking black oil from the cable entry point on the box but now discovered oil under the bonnet and it's come from a few holes in the outer sheath.
Why would black oil becoming out of the speedo cable?

I take it this is in your R17?

There is a tiny seal inside and an "O" ring on the outside of where the speedo cable goes into the green plastic insert in the gearbox.

I'm guessing the little seal inside is leaking and gearbox oil is travelling up the cable by capillary action, the reason why I think you are getting black oil is because the speedo cable has been lubricated with a black lubricant and is being forced out by the gearbox oil.

Depending one which way the spiral of the inner cable goes, it can also act as a pump 'screwing' the lubricant along the cable. I've heard of people getting a speedo full of oil by oiling a cable and it being pumped up into the speedo head.

If it has just started leaking, I'd expect it to be black from years of lubrication inside the sheath. So no surprise there. The leak itself is a surprise to me though. If it continues long enough, the clean gearbox oil will flush all the fine black stuff out and it will become a clean leak.

I've heard of Stuey's observation but never seen it myself, fortunately. Good point isn't it? I think best to fix at source and check the speedo head end!

I presume the gearbox oil level is correct.

Thanks all for the information. I removed the speedo cable from the instrument and just pulled it out from the firewall. I have wrapped some rag around where it leaks as I don't want this black oil on my new paintwork. Tied it up along the back so as not to clash with the belts. It's not leaked at the instrument end. I have a GPS speedo currently, as the endless drive and pinion in the 395 gearbox does not suit my 17's speedo. But I still have to look at the seal. Thanks col for pointing it out. I will need a small dentist mirror to look inside while under the car. Wish I had a hoist

Re the hoist, me too!! There's a very interesting range out there and you have the height but I guess want a movable one not a permanent fixture. I must dig out the model I identified once.

It was missing Col. But I've just mocked up a bung for now. Removed the cable all together.
