Sacked by the junior partner in the Alliance: He keeps his job at Renault. (So far!)

This is a story with legs. He's still in jail in Japan with a very high level defence lawyer. He's one of the top three indentified CEOs in Japan - quite the rock star there for good reason.

Renault in France has said that they are waiting for evidence/information before doing anything, quite correctly.

No comments from me on the subject but boy it is both interesting and completely unexpected. It will be fascinating as it unfolds I fear.

There is a conspiracy theory getting around that this action from the Nissan board is being done to stop him from following through with a planned merger with Renault that they are not happy about.

I read that and wouldn't be surprised. OK for Renault to bail them out and put in an effective CEO, but merging might just cross a pride line? Olympus' CEO was pushed out last year.

Nothing new there. Just more speculation. Was his alleged behavior something new or has it been going on since Ghosn grabbed Nissan by the throat and dragged them from the brink of bankruptcy? If the latter, why wait so long? It would seem that he has been accused but not yet charged with anything. And, true to type, the reporting organisation goes straight to the ex-wife for an in depth character assassination!

    Smacks of a conspiracy.
It reported that between the three car companies Ghosen was pulling around 30 million per year (Euro, dollars, who knows but a lot).
Why would anyone on 30 mill want or need to fiddle the books to get what, another million maybe.
This would be pocket change, and he'd risk his career and reputation for that.
I doesn't make sense and as Judge Judy always says, "If it doesn't make sense then it's probably not true".
    Lets see what comes.

But if VAG and Dieselgate is any measure, even if he is guilty of everything he should merit a stern talking to.
VAG were killing people over 10 years and most of them walked (with golden parachutes).

Until he is charged with something specific, which I'd have expected quickly and which doesn't seem to have happened, it is all speculation. You could look up what happened to the European head of Olympus a couple of years ago.

Ghosn is very smart, to say the least, and has his defence team led, I read, by the former head of the very Japanese gov't organisation that is investigating him.

    It'll be an interesting period....

    No charges yet!

Could the history of the Renault car company be replaying again? Like Louis before him in 1944, are there conspirators at work to ensure he's deposed?

We'll see. My understanding is that Louis had quite run out of friends. The Peugeot and Michelin family members weren't arrested and beaten to death but they must have worked with the Germans too - what else could they have done, realistically?

    Ambition carries its risks eh....

Well the Austin Tractor factory was in France and the management refused to work with the Germans and were shot. So the factory then produced whatever the Germans wanted them to produce.

More on the subject. It looks like the proposed merger between Renault and Nissan was probably the catalyst for action against Ghosn. It also appears that prosecutors in Japan have a 99% success rate. Watch this space, and never rescue a Japanese car manufacturer from insolvency.......

    Very suspect?
Why would anyone care at that level of business if he had renovated properties using corporate money if the merger was successful?
    Seems suspicious him being detained?

Christmas is over and he's still in custody with belated charges brought up. Conspiracy theorists can have a ball with this.

Icon5 International influence or lack of any attempt by France to intervene..

Mnnn sniff of the deep state involvement, and in Japan the influence cards are conveniently stacked to the home corporate/government side and France has little political pull to exert on Japan.

I guess that if North Korea was still firing missiles into the sea of Japan and beyond, and Trump declined to do anything until executives were politically released and exonerated you might see a change of heart, but that won't happen with the present Macron/Trump international chess game as it is.

In the end it comes down to who sells cars under what banner and where. Is Toyota & Co. a big enough Japanese money earner/seller in Europe for France to use tariff threats or embargo's to leverage Ghosn's release, if not exoneration. Would Macron even try, given his strident opposition to Trump tactics.

Interesting to see it play out in a world where influence and dirty tricks seem key chess moves...these days.

Jest my thoughts and musings, feel free to speculate and guess...

At least Japanese prisons are spotless and efficient. Even the execution room looks like a hotel lobby - pity about the square cut out in the carpet. I hope he likes rice with seafood and ultra-military regimentation.

The prosecution have already shown themselves to be a shifty lot, adding extra alleged offences at highly co-incidental intervals as a reason to keep Carlos under lock and key indefinitely.......

New charges on Friday. Been in custody since 19th November and could be there up to a year before trial, health issues developing and denied contact with family members it seems. Japanese justice appears to be quite different to other countries of the first world.

I see the French have hit back with some fraud accusations of their own in the bureaucratic / QANGO arena. Some political leverage in the offering maybe....

BBC - The head of Japan's Olympic Committee is being formally investigated in France for alleged corruption in the awarding of the 2020 Games to Tokyo, a French judicial source has said.

japanese police and prosecutors have a huge degree of discretion. Once a charge comes into a court, an acquittal is uncommon. Mr Ghosn will be well aware of that. There is no jury to be influenced.
