    Default Introducing my new toy.

I just want to introduce everyone to our latest family member.

This is Alice, Alice is a 1987 Alpine GTA. She's beautiful, powerful and handles like a dream but like all French women she's stubborn and temperamental. She broke down twice in the first 2 kilometers and ended up in a specialist garage for repairs.

She will bite too, she's already shown me that if pushed to hard through a corner she will take over and put me somewhere where I don't want to be. I think as we get to know each other she'll be fine.

No front badge or decals anywhere, except the Alpine Affaire sticker. Really trying to confuse the viewing public. They have their foibles, mostly electrical, and sometimes chassis corrosion when from the UK, but are an interesting, well mannered and capable car. Does it have air conditioning? Melbourne, maybe you don't need it, but in Queensland it can be like sitting in a microwave in summer. Some time ago there were only 14 turbos and 4 naturally aspirated GTAs in Australia, although I expect Colin or Steve K would know exactly.

I kinda like the no badge look, keeps people guessing except I've only had it a bit over a week and it's already been called a Lotus.

No Air cond. (Yes we do need it in Vic, I used mine in the 307 yesterday). Doesn't even have power steering or cruise control. Or a turbo for that matter.

It was Jayson Hinder's car from ACT. I bought it off his widow, it hasn't moved for years so has a few teething problems but got home okay.

Engine is 3.0 V6 Safrane. Goes very nicely, plenty of torque, I couldn't give a stuff about originality I just wanted a nice car that goes well.

It looks fantastic, goes really nicely and sounds awesome so I'm very happy.

Engine is hunting a bit at idle when warm but that's just some of it's teething problems, remember it hasn't been run in years.

drivers window reg needs replacement but I'm told it's just R25.

What is wrong with it? These cars date back to when things were infinitely repairable, so if I were there I would take a shot at fixing it. Most of the time things like that mean poor contacts or a motor with a dirty/worn commutator.

As a first attempt I would liberally squirt WD40 in everything that's supposed to move and then try a separate power source directly in the motor to see how that goes.

I haven't pulled the door apart yet to see but yes I agree with soaking everything first.

I just needs help getting up (old age thing) if you hold your finger on the button it goes up in jerks (another old age thing) and usually has to pulled with the other hand (no comments please)

Window regs are cable operated, sheath is coiled wire and gum up with dirt.
They get slower and slower resulting in motor and switch contact failure.
If the motor is ok, a good clean and lube of the cable etc can rehabilitate.

If that is the case, I would go further and replace all the cables with modern high quality bicycle ones with teflon sheath. Those are the duck's guts, smooth as silk and practically forever lasting in this application. Motor and switches can be cleaned with D5 spray (contact cleaner). Expensive, but worth every penny. Lubes and cleans. Follow with isopropyl alcohol (Brake cleaner) after a day or two to flush out the gunk and residue. WD40 in contacts will kill them after an initial apparent fix.

My memory might be broken, but I have the idea that the drivers side regulator is the same as the passenger side in the R25. Yes I would think the Safrane motor would be a good swap. Regarding the handling, perhaps the tyres are old and hard, given the car has sat for a time. I don't find that there is any need for power steering, even with the wider wheels like yours.

Yes your right about the tyres Alan. They were unroadworthy anyway but I had hoped they'd last to Melbourne but when we were leaving Canberra a really bad vibration happened at about 100kph. So bad I was thinking driveshaft and we limped it to Barry McAdie's place, couldn't find anything and eventually borrowed the wheels off his GTA and drove home without and problems. As soon as we got home I bought new ones and freighted his back but the new Continental 255/45 R17 have certainly fixed most of the driving problems.

Just kidding about the powers steering, every car I drive has PS and feather light pedals so getting in this thing is a real step back in time but that's what makes it so good.

Alice, My daughter names them like Norman the 403 and Wallace the 505. She just looks at them and that's what comes into her head. Must admit Alice puts me in wonderland every time I drive her.

Of course when she first said Alice my immediate reaction was,

Alice, Alice who the f... is Alice.

(Damn now that song is stuck in my head again)

Yep all done, they never even commented on the exhaust. Biggest issue is the discs are only just undersized and they look like there only Fuego so no problems at all.

I gather your not fitting a tow bar to yours Barry? Then how do you do a tip run?

You saw my Fuego Turbo at my place didn't you (parked out the front)- it has a tow bar off my other Fuego that I sold and went to near Newcastle. So all good but I might have to look at getting a proper tow vehicle instead of hiring a Toyota truck from Kennards altho that is cheaper when you take into account all the expense of owning another vehicle - rego, insurance etc etc.
