Did that used to be David Cavanagh's Reno?

Facetiously, I'd say Grey. Seriously, that looks the same colour as the very original one that lives in the Hills, part of what's his name's collection of R8s - his car might help. The early ones, if mine is a guide, don't necessarily have the colour stencilled on the body. Perhaps contact Simon.....

Did I know you had an R8? They just keep coming out of sheds.....

Without seeing it in the sun, my guess would be “awful Grey” - aka Eiffel Grey, but I will consult the files and try to see how many greys there were post ‘64.

It's an early 1100 by the bumpers FWIW.

    Hi John,

Yes this car was a part of the deal Dave Cavanagh struck to buy his R8G. It is too good to wreck so I struck a deal with Dave as I had the roll cage out of his newly acquired R8G and I wanted that R8, which is just about to be restored/modified.😎
The grey Hills based R8 you are thinking of is more than likely Dave Hicks' car which is a real grey (Eiffel) where mine is more blue/grey.

My local paint shop claim they have all paint mix codes for old Renaults. Perhaps one near you has them as well. If so get them to mix a sample of each of the likely colours and then do a comparison on a part that hasn't faded much. Or take a part that may not have faded much in to them. Not sure what part that could be on an 8. But on a Floride Caravelle it is usually the inside of the glove box lid. Give it a good cut and polish first.

On an R8, that spot is likely to be under the aluminium kick panels on the door jams, or the removable strip off the rear doors perhaps. There’s not much else removable that would have the original colour.

Underneath the dash perhaps, but again not removable.

Yes, Dave Hicks' car was the one I thought of. I've not seen one your colour. Good acquisition! Enjoy....

May be under the bonnet (luggage compartment lid). Bit big to lump around though.

Just keep looking! There was one for sale in Perth on this forum recently, it did not sell quickly and it has gone to Victoria quite recently. Another went from one Perth owner to a new owner a few months ago, but was not advertised. I'm quite surprised they still come out of the woodwork.

There's an R8 G for sale in South Australia - it's been for sale for ages.

Do you belong to the local Renault Car Club? The local guys would know what is around.

    Cheers

Here is a copy of Berger Paints 1962 Colour Charts. Hope this helps.

    Don't think it will Frank.
The R1130 (first R8) came out in '63 and the facelift mid 64. Despite JohnW saying it has round bumpers, as far as I know this is a '64 model as it has some of the chrome embellishment of the R1132 (C Pillar boomerangs, 1100 badge on the rear panel etc) that the earlier cars didn't have. Be interesting to see a shot of the dash to see if that is R1130 or R1132, but in 50 odd years, a lot could've been changed.

We also don't know if it was in fact painted in an original colour at all unless Dave C confirms with the previous owner to him.

Yes, I thought it was a 1964/5 1100 Kevin. My 1964 R1130 car is a "facelift" car and was first registered in 1965 (no-one bought it after the 1100 became available!) and it has the C-pillar boomerangs. I discovered in 2007 on the way home from Cowra that the first owner bought and fitted the boomerangs himself! That explained it as they were a puzzle!

I note on the Berger colour chart that Trinidad Red (my colour) has no recipe but "buy ready mixed" or words to that effect. I think David Hicks car in the Adelaide Hills is the only grey one I've ever seen.

Anyway, maybe we can persuade R10S FAN to slip up to Inverell and show us next year....

    Cheers

I messaged the previous owner today, he is going to ask his father if he remembers anything about the colour as they repainted it years ago. Looks like ill have to start a Resto thread! 😛😬
