    Default Renault R4 Motor

Dismantled the 850 gordini motor from my 60's floride & found it's completely stuffed, a 750 R4 motor came with it so i dismantled it to see if anything could be used & found the R4 motor 680-02 which is in great condition runs backwards ie anticlockwise, does anyone know the reason as the R4 motor is mounted in the same configuration as the floride.
does anyone have a R4 workshop manual & can look up the combustion chamber volume, the floride's volume is 27.3cc & if the R4's head volume is smaller I am considering fitting it to the 850 motor ( after porting the
    head out to gordini specs)

    Brian,
The main differences of the 2 motors are:

The camshaft turns the opposite way
The starter turns the opposite way
The crankshaft slinger at the rear main works the opposite way.
And if I am not mistaken the 680-XX is a chain drive cam.

And if it is a 750cc bores in the liners are different.

The motor runs the opposite way, as the crank handle was then on the nose of the gearbox.

There was a large ride on lawn mower , often used by golf courses , that used what was a R4 motor that ran backwards.
When in the business I reconditioned two of these for St Ives Golf Club, piston and sleeve kit supplied by Yong at Auto France.
As Geckoeng has already noted there are a number of differences between the lawn mower and the R4 motors.

    Hi
Yes those mowers were a Toro Groundsmaster 72. Quite a few of them around in the ol' days. The courses I worked at moved on to the same model with a diesel engine so I had little experience actually doing much to the Renno engine models. The Renault engines were sold in the USA by Contenential.
Here is a link to a slightly later model, I think.

Hi, Ray, you are correct, nothing will fit the floride, i was hoping to use the 680-02 block as the 670-02 floride block has too much wear in the camshaft bearing surface & the 680-02 is like new, I will check if the 850 liners will fit the 680-02 block tomorrow. if not I will have to try find another 850 floride or dauphine motor. FYI the cam drive is by gearsthat are almost double the width of the 670-02 motor's
