ok so now my cooling problems are rectified I turn my attention to the oil leak.
after I clean the leak up I go for a drive to enjoy a non overheating car but also to see where my oil leak is
photo show the approx. area...under manifold sort of under alternator....i'm think the diamond plate on engine block? could it be the manifold gasket? would oil come from here..
please not a cracked block...I see some blue silicon junk smeared on the engine block in some dodgy attempt to stem the flow...
also my tacho is not working and dash lights...fuse...if so where? the glovebox is locked and no key so hope not in there
how to free up the heater dial...which just doesn't want to turn much...I used a bit of hand pressure and cracked the plastic knob...damn
looking for 2 little hubcaps that go on wheel cenres and the plastic bung? that goes between door handle knob and body
    oh what fun....

It looks like one that was advertised through the Renault Car Club (VIC) a few years back. From memory it was a deceased estate, one owner, around the Fitzroy/Brunswick area. If the person you bought it from owned it for about 2 years, it'll likley be that one.

I've got some spare correct hubcaps and an endless supply of door handles/plastics. Plenty of other parts too if you need. Just PM me.

I suspected something like that as the guy I bought from was in MG car club and in ebay photos there were other Renaults around...but none at house when I picked it up...old photos from 2 years ago I would say..
it certainly seems like it has come from a caring home it seems original in many respects..
there is no glovebox key (any get in suggestions?_
and no history..love to find details of past owner/family to track any receipts/logbook
wonder where the oil leak originates from...can't be inlet manifold so hoping it is the diamond shaped plate around that area...any suggestions folks what else it may possibly be?
    cheers and thanks to all

That leak could be the camshaft seal.

Oil's a bit dirty.... Leaks are good like that - draw your attention to things.

Sounds as if that heater valve hasn't been turned for aeons - good luck in finding one that works - Sarosa to the rescue perhaps!!

Sounds like you've acquired a pretty useable and tidy 16. Great that the overheating was just bleeding. I'd ponder why it had been drained mind you. Regardless, do enjoy it!

    Cheers

After the R8, I was a bit intimidated by the R16 but that was before I acquired the Citroen CX. The 16 is a doddle in comparison.

Heater valves can some times just need pulling apart, replacing the O ring and general cleaning.

In addition to this, it would also be worth checking the breather hoses and rocker cover for sludge. There is a flame trap on the rocker cover that can get sludged up creating pressure in the crankcase, also the hoses can get sludged up if maintenance is delayed.
