You would need an R17/18 "395" gearbox to run it !!!!!

    And, And, And .......!!!!!!

No wonder. Just do. Oh wait Grafton is a little way away from you.

But back to gearboxes, I'm confused again. this is correct? (just talking about bell housing bolt patterns, and forgetting all the real work, clutches, flywheels, starter motors etc etc etc)

    K4J/M & 352 = XD
    F4R & 365, 395 = XD

Why do I feel people have used 807's with the 352 after replacing the input shaft from a 365, 395? Or did I just make that up and have been perpetuating this illusion.

Point being if input shaft changes, then

    F4R & 352 = XD

Not that I'm about to do this but just so it's straight in my messed up head.

When you put an F4R in an R8 you use an R16 bell housing and an adaptor plate. You'd be able to get one out of France.

An F4R in a 12 would make it a lead pointed arrow, if it could actually fit in lengthways without extensive mods. It is a longer, taller, motor, so the bonnet would also require a decent bulge. The extra taller weight over the front end would make for interesting handling, and the available ratios using any of the 35x, and 39x gearboxes would not suit the characteristics of the motor. A UN1 would add to the weight, as well as having unsuited ratios. Steering without power, would be exceptionally heavy.

For a 12, I still think the optimum is a warmed 1289/1397, with modern EFI and engine management rather than a Weber/Dellorto, and a 365 5-speed behind it. And you would still need to find a set of decent driveshafts :-)

I think an R17TS/G motor and 5 speed is pretty fast in an R12. Particularly if it was the "160 bhp" version. With uprated suspension. I guess modern efi would make it even better. Further more they fit without any mods, and in QLD don't need an engineering certificate so long as original 17TS/G brakes etc are fitted.

If I had a spare 600 I'd get it and put it in the corner for a rainy day/future project.

If you are worried about the added weight to the front of an R12 then put it in the middle. It would be a lot of work though.

    bowie,
I would not go near a 365, they have a soft crownwheel and pinion, and that is very difficult to find nowadays. And who worries about ratios when you mainly use 2,3, and 4.

I just thought after going to all that trouble, you'd get optimum results with modern engine management and injection. Normally I'd stick with carbies and coil and points ignition, mainly because I've never had any trouble with them. But for something nice and experimental, it would be more rewarding to go to the next level :-)

Also my thoughts are along the lines of a road/track car, rather than a mid-engined 12, which would be a lot of work to create something just 'cos you could have a go. It'd be cheaper, much less hassle, and likely much more fun to go and see Adam Spence and see if he is still selling his ex-Targa Renaultsport Spider, likely less of a money pit than creating a mid-engined 12 too :-)

    I wasn't actually serious about a mid engined 12.

    Exactly!

Oh Simon, I believe I saw that Spider in the flesh a month or so back. A new owner was with it, retired from a Super Sprint meeting I believe cursing a gearbox.
