    Default Widening R8/R10 14" Rims

I heard that AJAX in Moorabbin shut its doors not long ago.

I hear there was another place in Heidelberg, Vic that used to cut the centres out of 15" steel wheels and weld them up on 5" steel rims.

Can anyone recall their name and if they are still in operation?

Can't help in VIC, but I had R16 centres welded into new holden rims to make 14x6" wheels for my R10/R8.
They were done by a company here in NSW called Morton and May in Warwick Farm. Was $750-800 for the set (I supplied the R16 wheels, they did the rest).

Iíve got a pair of R8/10 15 inch rims that have been widened (to 6 inches I think). Currently have 195/60 tyres which donít look either stretched or baggy. Happy to sell them if of any use. PM if interested Located in Melbourne too.

    Cheers

I have gone down both paths: cut down 15s & R16 centres. The advantage of cutting down, 15s is that they can be cut to mate up with the wheel wells of the rims being used With the 14 centres from the R16, one has to check that they will reach (or over-reach - in which case slight cutting down will be in order).

However, if the R16 centres will mate with your intended rims then that is by far the better path to follow. This is because the R16 centre is stronger & has much better stud hole & nut design.

If you are stuck with cutting down a 15" R10 rim, then I'd very much recommend the reinforcement which I added to mine (a "spacer" ring cut out of 3 mm plate & welded at two points, 40į & 80į, in each 120į arc between the studs). This has two benefits: The first is very much reducing the "flapping" of the wheel centre in those arcs & the consequent stress & strain (to the point of cracking) in the stud hole area. The second is giving one three new holes which aren't flogging oval &, as they are in 3mm plate, will better resist future ovality.

    enjoy! Peter

Have done a few wheels for me over 40 years ad never let me down

Do a lot of oddball stuff and charge a fair ( not stupidly low, not stupidly high ) price

They give good advice and are honest and helpful

Only sticking point might be that they told me when I went in with 4CV rims to tweak that they could only get 6" new rims, nothing smaller, but that they were quite happy to weld on anything that I could provide, provided it was safe and would fit

You may need to source your own 5" rims

    Best Wishes

    Andrew

concerning 5"x14, old Valiant rims are that as I recall; so, a contact to the Valiant owners' clubs?

Thanks for the offer, although I acknowledge the R16 inners are stronger (thus a little heavier) I am hoping to match the other 3 Wheels i have with R10 inners.
I have a 14Ē x 5Ē rim that i can salvage if needed as well as heaps of R10 centres

    20 should be adequate.

Are they all ROH ones, welded and locally made? Any 10S lurking in the stash with the redbacks?

    Cheers

I earnestly advise reinforcing the centres then.

Not sure John about the 10S type, but they are all stored off site and no doubt being well guarded by the redbacks

Try the below annotated photo. As I said earlier, the plate was 3mm. I took a wheel to an engineering works to facilitate them getting inner & outer ring diameters & (150mm PCD) stud pattern & hole diameter right. Supplied them then to the wheelwright doing the conversion.
