    Default Racespec / Renault Track Day

    Bustamif! How'd it go

    I headed back up to collect some paperwork at 4~ and your beautiful 8 had departed.

    Was nice to meet a few of you. It bought a tear to my eye to see so many diamond badges loitering together with purpose.

    By all accounts (from my side of the fence) a good day. But 1 incident with someone trying to build a sand castle out of gravel, you lot are very well behaved.

    I hope someone will jump in and post a few snaps, I saw a few of you in Reno club shirts with cameras hanging around as I was darting around the place.

    Oh who turned up in that Green R10 Major? It was very nice.

    I was thinking about that. It might have been a Green 10S, owned by one of our (RCCA) members. His son was running a black megane I believe. The 10 Major designation was not used in Oz to my knowledge.

    That probably makes more sense. It was very nice.

    And that's not to discredit the see of Clio's, because that was a welcomed treat!

    The R8G (1600) was far more competitive against the Clios and Meganes than I expected. There were 6 groups, group 1 was for the fastest etc. I was in the second group and generally in the first few cars in that group. I think a few people were very surprised at how well a 40-year-old car performed against modern cars. Quite a few waved me through after the first couple of sessions.
    The fresh brake pads were bedded in during the first run while I remembered which way the track went and worked out gearing and brake points.
    I used less second gear and more third when the temp came up a little too much. I was happy when temp came down again however I had to put the heater on to get it sitting in a good zone.
    Handling was great, spring and shock settings were spot on, tyre temps showed everything in the alignment was exactly right but I wish I had a cockpit adjustable front sway bar. It had a bit of understeer in the first two to three laps then when the rear tyres got too much temp it turned to a fair bit of oversteer. It could probably use a limited slip diff that would help the rear tyre temp issue.
    It had a bit of a fuel cough from the carbs out of the uphill right-hand hairpin up the hill.
    After I learnt what I went there to find out, I had lunch then put it away. Pretty good day I reckon.
    As expected, the South circuit really suits the Gordini against the late model cars. There is a sprint event there in August and I believe the Renault club is invited so I hope I can find time run it again.
    Hope to see some pics from today. I am told there may be something on Facebook and/or Instagram

    Ah I'm sad I missed it in action Bustamif, It must have stood out next to all those muffled turbos.

    Can't wait to have a spin around that track myself after seeing all those diamonds on it. Next time. But glad it went well. It is surprising how little the R8 is in context next to a modern Clio or Megane. Actually what is the wheel base.

    R8/10 = 2270mm
    R12 = 2440mm (just because I can)
    Clio I & II = 2472mm
    Clio III = 2451mm
    Clio IV = 2589mm
    Megane = 2580mm
    Megane II = 2625mm
    Megane III = 2651mm
    Megane IV = 2669mm

    Well there you go. The 4 door saloon car is really quite small.

    Yes the NSW Road Race Club have it booked Sunday 19th August. Round 5 of the Super-sprint series I believe. The day before, Mazda MX5 club are booked if you wanted a sneaky practice the day before (they are usually pretty good at supporting other marquees should their numbers require it).

    Yes there were a few interested in that Sticker Ray

    Some photos I took. I have to say it put a huge smile on my face seeing the 8 out there
    And Iím sure some Clio drivers were worried with Chris out there going toe to toe with them

    And might we all say, how great does it look with black wheels. Chris, you are an inspiration

    Thanks for the comments guys and those pics of the car in the pits. I am hoping there may some pics of my 50-year-old Renault actually on the track monstering those Clios .

    I built it for Go more than Show. Before spending money on a paint job, I would rather buy a Quaife diff.

    I found it gets occasional wheelspin from an inside rear wheel at around 90 kph in 3rd over some of the crests. I could make some suspension changes but I believe that it would hurt low speed cornering so a Quaife is the preferred option. Also looking at increasing capacity from 1600cc to 1796cc and going to a more aggressive cam with bigger valves when the engine is apart.
