    Default R1135 Gordini 1967

    Hi out there,
My car is back from the blaster, wow is me, more damage than envisaged.
Has anyone have a brass expansion chamber for the cooling system?
Mine has been damaged and has a number of cracks due to being in a rearender.

In my experience with that brass device in our early R8, they fail anyway. Not original, but I fitted an R12 polythene one many moons ago. I'd give you my old one, but it split on the weld and I threw it out.

I reckon I've seen the odd one on Ebay France, but not many.

Great that it is back home and best wishes for the rebuild!

If the shell is original R1135, it will be worth persisting.

The brass expansion tank is exactly the same as an early R4 one, I've got a spare which has a split if nothing else turns up. A good radiator place may be able to fix it up. The valve was still available as a new part from Renault not so long ago too.

    Hi Ross
They always look much worse when the blasters have got rid of the rust and bog and paint that masked the holes and poor repairs It only gets better after that !

    Hey Ray,
I feel a bit better now.
My car is in better nick than your pictures show. The only bad bit is the rusted out channel in the boot.
Car goes to panelbeater 5 May this year, there for 12 months, then assembly!!!!

    Regards,
    Ross

They all rust there and happily it isn't structural. I "fixed" mine in about 1975 with a sheet of GI and a few self tapping screws. Very inelegant and all that but it is under the mat, can't be seen and I haven't needed to touch it since. Lots of fishoil too. Not for the purists perhaps but.....

Here are a few photos of Ross' car (posted with permission). I saw the car a few months ago and it is an original R1135.

I just can't believe how people allow these very specific cars to deteriorate so much. Graeme's was very rough, particularly the mechanicals.

Keep up the rebuilding .... !!!

I can believe it, I'm probably doing the same thing. However they were built to live fast and die young - hopefully successful, in the eyes of the manufacturer. I'm pleasantly surprised by the numbers that seem to have escaped a hard life of competitive rallying, especially given there were only circa 90 8G's (1100 & 1300) sold in Australia - they really have come out of the woodwork over the last few years. Once 10 or so years old, they were just an old banger if rough and rallied, although they never seem to have got to old banger prices, the non-competitive cars fairly tightly held.

When I did mine up going on 20 years ago, finding parts was hard, advice was questionable in some cases. Then the internet came along, and I found Katriina's Renault Center. Which opened all the doors to Mecaparts, JY Lardinois, Neo Retro, Marchants, Racing Car Diffusion, etc in a way that hasn't been duplicated since, given the proliferation of specialised individual Renault sites now. At that stage, everyone was on the one Renault site, information was concentrated in one place. It made things very easy, and dispersed information very quickly, it was quick to dispel bad verbal advice like "Mecaparts are unhelpful and difficult to deal with" I never had any problems once a direct connection was made - at that stage by letter as they only had a Minitel connection.

Nowadays, the parts situation appears to make restoration quite easy, except if you are looking for a good set of PK LMP tail lights :-)

Oh yes, the cats loved it. They were puzzled for weeks - all the smells but nothing to eat! It was very funny at the time, although my wife had other thoughts about the smell!

Yes, we all owe Katriina a huge thank you. What's the status there, do you know?

    I don't think the site's active anymore.
Katriina's graduated and working; and focused on other things. One of my Facebook friends involved in Renaults is friends with her on Facebook, as I've seen her name come up - maybe even Simon himself?

As for blasting shell's - we've all got war stories to tell.

Thanks Kevin. She did a fantastic job, and I remember exchanging emails way back when. She even understood the distinctive smell of an R8!

Re war stories, I haven't any full shell stories, but I've never blasted a shell. Avoidance.... But then there was the rust I found in the middle cross-member of the R8 last year when I discovered it was full of sand and must have been wet and dry a few times and the panel at the front corner just behind the wheel arch and........ And with the 4CV, if it were blasted (and it won't be) I know where the mouse holes would be found at the back of the front wheel arches.....

They weren't designed for wading. The first time mine had accident damage on one side, we found shiny bare metal behind the sills. No rust, but it's dry in Adelaide in summer and the drainholes were always clear.
