    Default Renault Clio Sport 172

Hi all, I am currently completing an engine and gearbox transplant from a 2004 to a 2003 Clio Sport 172 and just noticed the speedo sensor, which sits in the 2004 gearbox, is blanked-off in the 2003. My question is, where does the 2003 speedo sensor sit, and will it still read after the change has been made. I assume it is from a wheel sensor, or around that area.

Also, any other differences that I may encounter. So far, this has been the only difference I have discovered.

    Cheers

I always wondered where my scenic RX4 speed sensor was…as the speedo and ABS lights came on together when it all failed and there was no gearbox sensor.

Maybe it gets speed data from the ABS system??

Later cars (not just Renault) normally ditch the speedo sensor in favor of using the ABS wheel speed sensors to do the same job.
    cheers,

Could you try and fit the old speed sensor to the blanked off gearbox?

    Hi Philo,
I think you might be in a spot of bother.
Early Clios used a speed sensor ( generator) driven directly off a screw gear on the the diff
On later Clios, this area of the gearbox housing is blanked off and the speed sensing is done via
    the ABS sensors.
I would assume the ECU's are set up differently.
Perhaps they may be able to be reprogrammed if you are lucky, but doubt it.
You may have to transplant a later ECU set.

Does that open up a whole can of worms for stuff like the engine immobiliser?

I'm not convinced the speedo gets reading from ABS sensors as I have turned mine off on the BSI to get rid of annoying errors and the old AL4 does not have the speed sensor fitted. So hiw does it work?

There was a change that added ESP in late 2003 ó look for the ESP button next to the dash light dimmer switch. Pre-ESP cars run the speedo from a gearbox sensor, ESP cars donít have a gearbox sensor and use a signal from the ABS. There were other changes too, such as increased camber front wishbones, yaw sensor and different versions of ECU and ABS computers to manage it all.

Whatís confusing is that the 2004 has a speedo sensor and the 2003 doesnít. The 2004 should NOT have a speedo sensor on the gearbox, while the 2003 MIGHT have a gearbox sensor depending on whether itís pre-ESP or not. The 2004 may be a mid-2003 build thatís pre-ESP.

Also 2004 is getting into the period when the 182 was released, it has different exhaust manifold and I believe the gearbox has slightly different ratios, but a 182 gearbox would definately not have a speedo sensor.

(I have two 172 Phase 2s, one with ESP and one without.)
