Default Something odd - HELP PLS! WTB - 807 Exhaust valves

Something a odd happened when I had my head serviced. The machinist told me all my exhaust valves were bent. He set them in the machine and all the heads wobbled! Inlets all good.

No corresponding dings in the pistons, any thoughts?

Guides ok but the valves stuffed.

Anyone have a set of new exhaust valves surplus to requirements?

The trouble is you don't know the history of the motor and what previous owners have done when dismantling and rebuilding the engine.

A previous owner read something on a web forum about someone's best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend, who heard from this guy who knows this kid who had bolted an 807 head onto their unmodified 841 block in their 18GTS, and dragged off an R35 GT-R. They tried it out......

Surely valves aren't tricky to get?

    Mecaparts.

These engines are not interference so I guess valves got sticky at some point in this engine's life (this is speculating around the possibility that some hamfisted monkey mangled them somehow) or the engine was revved too hard for what it could do and they bent as a result of the rockers pushing them hard to lift off the seats or colliding with the stems at valve bounce. What do the sealing surfaces look like? What about the seats? Does it look like there might have been some micro welding going on?

They can be straightened but I would look first at their hardness because I suspect they lost it (sign of overheating), and I am not sure they can be hardened back. Should be possible (look up the material and see whether you need a tricked out shop to do it or you can do it at home).

Yeah, not that tricky but I want them yesterday! I had a long weekend ahead of me and I thought come Monday...

    Col, I'm the dismantler...

Shiltzie, this is the motor out of my 17 that had did a head gasket and I had some head repairs done as part of the servicing. I'd been driving it about for a while with no engine gremlins - electric and brakes, yes - prior to the gasket poping.

I'm looking for an 807 R17 block, pistons, liners and rings etc., for an entirely different project.

Yeah Simon, I take your point but there are still no dings in the pistons, the valves are bent and the car went okay prior to the head gasket going.

They can't be bent much if the valve springs are straightening them enough for them to seat??? Very odd. No wonder you posted.

But then the valve springs would not be strong enough even for a few 'thou' would they? We have a mystery!

Have a look at the rocker arms' contact points. What do they look like?

Exhausted Aussie suppliers of 807 exhaust valves.

Anyone got a set of 4 they can sell me?

    Sure.

    Right here.

They come packed in an engine.

If you are terribly lucky I might find the old 17G exhaust valves out of my car. Can't guarantee they are any straighter than yours but I can check. You will need larger seats, I think. Interested?

PS. Nevermind. I found them. One is chipped on the sealing surface so unuseable, the other three don't have collets. Weirdly, one takes a three groove collet. The other two are standard one groove collet.

I have a set of used, but not used up, exhaust valves from an R17G. They are the same size, but have only a single semi- circular collet groove close to the tip of the valve, rather than the earlier triple groove of most of the 16TS exhaust valves. I have no collets for these valves as they were used when new valves were fitted to the head. If you can find the collets, you can have the valves.

Hi. If you don't mind me asking, and I'm not speaking out of turn, I'm looking at doing up an 807, but buying a rebuilt one might be an option, so do you have one for sale? Thanks.

Hi Schlitzaugen, thanks but I have a motor which I am trying to man-up to attempting to rebuild. Just thought if you had a rebuilt one, I could consider that. Thanks

I do have a freshly rebuilt 807 for my 17G, but I don't think you would pay what that cost to rebuild (and it is not for sale).

If you have never done one of these before, better tally it all up before deciding you want to do it. I don't think you'll see much change if any from 5k and that is assuming you won't have to chase some rocking horse manure part that done broke in yours.
