Default Photos of R8 for sale in USA

Here's the link to the advertisement - amazing set of photographs! I posted in the for sale area too....

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...ign=2018-01-03

Here's the oval plate photo - does anyone know (a) what the '100' stamped on the oval plate means and (b) whether the number is consistent with 1970? I thought they'd sold a million R8s by then. Simon?

The oval and diamond plates look like the remade ones that are available. Maybe the owner has made up some numbers for whatever reason.

Thanks Alan, that makes sense - could be a franken-eight! They do look brand new on close inspection.

Happy New Year to you all.

Those are a, ridgey-didge, pieces d'origine, set of Renault ID plates. The "repro" ones, fortunately, you can spot a mile off. The spec is 100, effectively a French home market car, and the oval plate number is consistent with a 1970 model year R1132.

Thanks Simon, I knew you'd come through. I was surprised by how fresh the cut edge was on the oval plate, and Alan's comment seemed quite logical to me, and the diamond plate has been refitted post-painting. I'm surprised at the low number for 1970.

Geckoeng commented to me that in South Africa paint codes were sometimes stamped on the oval plate (my comment: "to add to the confusion!") so there's more to add to our knowledge.

From the 'Alpine' world, this interesting list arrived overnight:

"I don't know much about the R8 but wonder if the 100 is probably the same as on the oval plate of an A110 and indicates the market for which the car was built and therefore the equipment fit of lights etc:
100 France (Quite often not used)
    101 Belgium
    102 Italy
    103 Holland
    120 Germany
    123 Switzerland
    203 Mexico
    267 Spain and Portugal"

Much obliged to a gentleman in UK for it - I'd not seen these codes before.

JohnW the codes for all countries are in the front of most parts manuals from about 1962 onwards.

I never thought to look! Have you ever seen an oval plate in Oz stamped with 80? I don't think I have, but maybe I've just had a sheltered life!

Don’t forget that most of the Australian assembled cars don’t have the country code, so only the R1134’s, 15, and 17’s etc (and maybe early 4CV’s or other French assembled models would have it).

They would Oz assembled unless really early though?
That’s my point. I think Nagaman May be correct re your R1135 given their limited numbers. The others had more australian content although the 4cvs and R8’s etc May still have been considered CKD re the shells etc. perhaps someone who worked at Heidelberg could confirm?

Thanks Kevin. Aren't we a bunch of anoraks!!

My 4CV was built in France for export to Australia, but maybe predates those country codes.

My understanding, for the 4CVs at least, is that the oval plate number was fixed on the shell in France before the CKD kit was assembled. So that is, for the French records, the build date and it isn't recorded, AFAIK, whether the car was then fully assembled at Billancourt or crated up as a CKD export.

    Cheers

Version numbers on the Oval Plate commenced in 1960. Australia was initially included with Version 80 (poor roads/ tropical climate/ RHD), then 800, in the 1970's it gained its own unique 762 code, then in the 1980s, became a "Normal" roads 662 spec.

There seems to be a mixed bag of R1134 8Gs, either Version 70 (good road/ temperate/ RHD, (Fahrenheit)) ie UK spec, and Version 80. What the difference is between a Version 70 and Version 80 R1134 is would be interesting :-)

For Australian assembled cars, up to 1971 the plates were stamped. From 1971, the numbering system changed, with the Oval Plate attached to the car prior to painting, with no version number stamp, although some of the later 12/Virage were stamped 762.

Because the body number started with R1100 and continued through the range where as the oval plate number started again with R1101. As many fittings were different e.g the motor and gearbox, where as the body was still the same. The oval plate and diamond plate are used when ordering parts not the body number.

My 1976 R12 has a 762 stamped into the bottom of the oval plate.

I dismissed this number as something else till you posted this Simon, originally I was looking for a number similar to above and in the centre of the oval plate.

My 10 has an 800 stamp.

    Caravelles had 75 then 80
    R81132 had 800 then 760
    R16 800 then 801 then 761
    R15/17 761
    R12 802 then 762

I never checked them all the way through just enough to give an indication.

Well, we learn with every new thread. I didn't realise this whole business of extra stamped numbers on the oval plate, my cars not having those numbers.

I have a very similar plate with Carrosserie number - I've never known what to do with it.
