    Default Floride Project

Hi Everyone. I've just purchased an old Floride that's sat in a shed for 35 years (Rip Van Floride?) It's basically sound with a little rust in only a couple of places. It's been modified with a 1400 engine, and radiator at the front. The engineering wasn't good with crimped radiator and fuel hoses and rubbing brake lines. Every bit of rubber on the car has perished. The idea is to bring the exterior of the car back to original. The interior has been re-upholstered and needs doing again. It has high backed bucket seats which I'll keep. Plan A is to put in an electric drive train. It will only be used locally so I won't need a lot of batteries and I can re-charge them off my solar roof panels. So far the car is stripped down to every last nut and bolt (including a few imperial ones) and I'm waiting to get it blasted so that I can start on the body. The forums here have been very helpful so I thought I'd join and document my progress.
    I live in Bridgetown W.A.
    Regards to all, Phil.

I have a book from the 1980's that documents how to build an electric Floride, Dauphine, VW. Obviously the electronics will be a little dated.

    Hi Phil,
Welcome aboard the Renault Restoration Train. You have a very nice looking car.

I am no "purist" and can see the merits of an electric car, but would urge you look at an 1108cc R8/R10 engine, to give you more traveling distance. And return the radiator to the rear. There are of course people with Renault electric car history in Perth.

Have you been in contact with John van Halteran at Hester. He has good classic Renault knowledge.

Start a Thread in "Projects" and please keep us informed of your progress.

    Enjoy your project,
    Ray

Just curious Ray, why not have a front radiator? Appearance, originality (despite your disclaimer) or what? (I have been very pleased with the functionality of the front radiator in my 4CVG.)

    cheers! Peter

    following leads

Yep, it's the Yornup Floride. It has a lot more than a little rust and I was told it's a R16 engine in it.
John in Hester has what's left of the Floride that I stripped, and the Bridgetown Floride (actually Mt Isa Floride) from 2012 is still sitting in my garage rust free after I cut out and welded up while I was still in Collie.

    Peter (4cvg),
So many bodies are butchered by people who put radiators in the front, as most believe the rad has to stand vertical to work well. Angled in the spare wheel cavity works very well. But an R12 rad in the back of a Floride (original position) with electric fan works very well. And then you can still carry spare wheel in the correct place.

Florides and Caravelles are very rare nowadays that damaging bodywork is a sin.

Peter, you have done yours well and very functional, so I have no problem. But, then who am I ..... ???

Great to see love heading towards another rear-engined Renault. Welcome to our forum!

There's a WA electric car group with good experience - PM me if you want a contact who has electrified a 4CV and lives in the south of Perth.

My gratuitous advice is to do nothing until you've sorted out the structural rust, or for that matter sorted out what is needed to fix whatever rust there might be lurking in there. Mr 63-1092 really knows these cars. Geckoeng and others up here in Perth know the RERs very well, so you have a little community to draw upon for help. Just make sure it is structurally OK before spending money on other things, at least that's my advice.

    Cheers

Thanks to everybody for their kind replies.
I'll try to answer your questions.
Yes, it's the Yornup Floride. It's sat there since 1981. I'm in touch with John Van Halteran and his son Clint who I know. They are very knowledgeable and helpful and we'll be swapping some parts. I think Clint is having the mags, otherwise they can come to you Jensen.
I'll be joining the electric car forum later after the main restoration is done. I've done a lot of reading over the passed couple of years and it's looking quite feasible.
Good advise about not spending money before ascertaining the rust level. I've been caught before. It is now stripped and awaiting blasting but I can see most of the rust and I can fix it. The front boot floor is a dogs breakfast and I'll have to make a new one which will be a challenge.
I'll start a new thread in Projects in a couple of weeks when I've something to report.

I should add that the electric 4CV in Perth is for sale with a dead DC motor after quite a few years of reliable daily use, the owner/designer/builder recommending a slight change to the electrics to run a modern AC motor instead, the correct spec DC motor being NLA.

PM me if you want to get in touch with the owner.

Sounds like acceptable news re the rust - glad to hear it and not surprised about the boot floor! Have fun.

Good you are linked up with JvH - lovely guy and please give him my regards! You could consider joining the Renault 4CV Register of Australia, as we link up all the rear-engined models around Oz. PM me if interested and I'll send a form. It's cheap and easy.

If the deal to buy the car came with the mags, keep them. They are quite rare, look cool once done up - especially given what you are doing, and will be easier to source tyres for - rather than the original 4 x 15" steelies.
