    Default BOSCH RE-55 Voltage Regulator

    Hi fellow Froggers.
Before I rush out and buy one I'm just wondering if anybody out there has an old (working) BOSCH RE-55 Voltage Regulator they can spare. My good R8 just blew one up last week when the wire on the back of the alternator snapped of. Apparently if it disconnects during running the Voltage Regulator gets overloaded.
Happy to pay for it plus postage.
BARNIE is coming on, hope to be posting some photos of the finished engine soon! Hard work this restoration but the finished job will be worth it, I keep telling myself!!
    Thanks Guys
    Cheers Phil

If you've run the alternator open circuit, as I did by accident a while back, I think you are likely to have blown the diodes in the alternator itself. There's quite a thread back there somewhere on this.

When replacing my (pretty old) Bosch alternator, I've had problems with RE-55 units giving strongly flickering headlamps. I reverted to the old style regulator, which didn't flicker but then started over-charging. We have an R8 owner here who is a retired TAFE lecturer on auto electrics, and he recommended setting up a relay by the regulator, so the wire from the ignition switch operated the relay to give a real 12V at the regulator, rather than taking that "12V" from the ignition switch. He suggested that with the length of the wiring, there could be voltage drop via the ignition switch, with the regulator trying to operate with less than a 12V input. I now have a short wire from the alternator +ve switched by that relay, so the regulator gets a real 12V input and the problem has gone away.

Those RE-55 units are available new on ebay in my experience. There are two types, more or less identical, but one made in Oz and the other made in Taiwan.

    Cheers
