Haven't watched the whole vid yet but this is the race and the R8 1100 gets a mention early....
John Connolly and Rex Emmett were the only R8 to finish, they managed 32nd.

According to the sound track (great video by the way, and thanks for the link) the R8 rolled after a wheel failure, "busted wheel" to be exact I think.

Fast and furious racing, with many references to drivers being saved by their seat belts! The lack of a safety car was pretty dramatic, seeing where the recovery folk were working with full on racing straight past them. Phew.

I seem to remember the little Datsun's hitting 100mph down Conrod in the same era and also losing wheels......check the last three entries on the results sheet for 1965....

When I look at what Bathurst has degenerated into - basically glorified Taxi racing, with cars that are very similar under the outer shell - I rather pine for the days when normal day to day cars were raced in major events by normal enough people.

I doubt that the risk managers would ever allow it, but it would be good to see a re-run of the old Armstrong 500 or early Bathurst, with original cars, close enough to factory specs

I would have thought the Production Car class at Bathurst 12 HR would be close to this?

I lived in Bathurst for a few years in the mid 80's. A friend at work told me about how the high school students in the 70's used to run the Bathurst High 500 for their muck up night. They'd turn up in whatever Mum had - Morris 1100's, minis, holdens etc Etc and do a two lap race - that's about how many laps they got in before the local crusty seargent would turn up and send them all home usually with a clip around the ears.

He also told me how he once rolled his mum's escort in essentially the centre of Bathurst driving home drunk from the pub, left it there and did a runner. The same seargent turned up at his home the next morning asking him when he planned on removing it - didn't need to trace the rego, knew who's car it was and where the family lived.

There was both R1130/32 1134 and 1135's that all ran at Bathurst over the years.

Due to quality of the original film, very hard to get any freeze frames that are sharp enough to get enough sharpness to see any detail.

However, Autopics have a photo of car 38 at Bathurst in 1965.

    65764 - Brian McGrath & David Fraser Renault R8 Bathurst 1965 - Photographer Lance J Ruting - AUTOPICS

Wikipedia lists car 38 as Renault R8

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1965_Armstrong_500

They also have a photo of Connolly/Emmertt Renault.

    65768 - J. Connolly / R. Emmett - Renault R8 - Bathurst 1965 - Photographer Lance J Ruting - AUTOPICS

Edit - The publication scanned in the below link lists car 38 as 1100 R8 - need to blow it up to read it,

There were no R1134 Gordinis that competed in the "traditional" Bathurst 500/1000 races. In 1965, insufficient numbers would have been sold in Australia, similar in 1966 when the limit on sales was increased to 250 identical units to be sold prior to the race.

The only 8G to compete was in the 1973 H-F 1000, but unlucky enough to be entered as a production stock car in the first year of Group C, which allowed racing rubber on the other cars in its class.

So apart from the various R1130s and R1132s competing, there was also a lonely square-eye 10 in 1969 to round off the rear-engined Renault Bathurst 500/1000 entries.
