    Default R8 Sump Gasket??

    Hi All,

I am busy assembling the race car's engine and I got NOS cork sump gasket. When trying to fit it I noticed that it has shrunk. My father used to soak it in warm water to resize it and I am sure I did at one stage as well. However, the one I have doesn't seem to grow when soaked in hot water. Does anybody have another trick up their sleeve to make these gaskets fit again?

Is it sort of the middle ages one, with like black rubber chunks mixed with the cork? If so, these don't seem to expand in the same way as the old full cork ones used to. It may be best to just update to the latest (compressed pale green) fibre based type. I just use wheel bearing grease as the sealant between the gasket and the metal parts,so far it seems to be working.

I haven't seen these green ones Simon! The last cork ones I saw were crushed cork in a black ?neoprene matrix and they held their size. I usually (well, very rarely actually) glue them to the block and in the corners of the bearing housings and use grease on the other surface, to get perhaps one "sump-off from underneath" job done without a new gasket. When did I last do this on the R8? Hmm. 1988 I think....

Thanks for the replies. It worked with the hot water, I was just to impatient and had to dunk them for about 20 minutes to get the effect.
