    Default 2006 Clio squeaky steering

    Hi guys,

My son's 06 Clio Campus has developed a squeak in the steering which sounds like rubber on metal. It's hard to pinpoint, but to me it sounds like it's coming from the rack. When you're inside, it sounds like it's coming from the steering column surround, but I'm sure it's being transmitted through the column. It is louder from outside, though.

It was only occasional but now is constant, and across the full range of steering. We tried silicone spray on the firewall rubber boot, which made no difference. If I bend over the engine while an assistant moves the steering, it sounds centered on the rack. Grabbing the rack boots etc. while moving the steering makes no difference.

The internet is alive with this problem, but I've found no real solution. I think it can be a few things, but the squeak, being a rubbery sound, doesn't convince me it's a dry ball joint or the like.

I haven't yet tried the silicone spray on the ARB bushes, but it does sound too obvious from very minor steering inputs to be this. We're going to have a go this weekend to sort it.

To me it sounds like dry rack end bushes but only due to the location, but as these are nylon or similar polymer, the sound is too rubbery to my ear.

    Any ideas?

    Stuey

Also check the lower balljoints, it may be unlikely, but there appears to have been a batch supplied with little to no grease that wear prematurely. My thoughts are similar to yours though, in that it would be the inner tie rod connections, from the description.

Thanks Simon. I do wonder whether we might get away with a bit of grease. I hope so.
