    Oh dear that is nice.

Make's that the the 3rd 1968 16 that I know of. Barossa Red too. Can't fault it for originality except rear seat belts, door mirror and perhaps front carpet replaced (should be darkgrey/black?) with Barossa Red I think).

I'd buy it no hesitation pending motor original and OK, but I won't with 3 already!

It's had the rare 1,500 litre engine conversion.

It is the rare original 1500cc (ok, 1,470cc) configuration R1150 :-)

And hopefully has a "rare uncracked" manifold !

These combined manifolds fitted to the non crossflow cylinder heads were a problem 35 years ago

Rare? All the TL's had the 1470cc non-crossflow motor didn't they?
It wasn't converted, it came from the factory like that.
(Anyway, why would a 'conversion' from 1565cc to 1470cc be seen as desirable enough to be mentioned in the ad. I'd consider this as a downgrade)
But that aside, it sure looks good.
Pity there aren't any engine bay or underbody shots.

No. The 16TL was never fitted with a 1,470cc motor, they were all 1,565cc.

There is often confusion around these early 16's.

The early 16's (I'm talking here in Australia from 1968-1970) were called "Renault 16" - not Renault 16TL or 16GL. They all had the 697-01, 76mm liner, 1470cc non crossflow engine. In Europe there were 2 spec's of this car the 16L or the 16GL. The GL had small upgrades on the L, like the padded storage box between the seats, lockable glovebox, etc (I've got the details somewhere if anyone's interested). The Australian "Renault 16" was effectively the European 16GL.

    In 1969 we also got the 807-01, 77mm liner, 1565 crossflow 16TS.

In 1971 the old "Renault 16" transformed into the 16TL, with the 821-01, 77mm liner, 1565 non crossflow engine.

Both 16's available in Australia now had the 1565cc engine, either non crossflow (TL) or crossflow (TS)

So in Australia we effectively had 3 R16's (not distinguishing between the manuals and auto's)

    The 1470cc Renault 16 (1968-1970)
    The 1565cc Renault 16TS (1969 - 1976)
    The 1565cc Renault 16TL (1971 - 1976)

I thinks that's all correct and hopefully clears it up.

I purchased a brand new R16 in late 1968. It was the original Cherry Red with black trim just like the one in the ad. I even rallied it! I too am smitten with a desire to own another one but have to bear in mind the divorce rate may increase rapidly.......

What, all those women leaving their husbands to be by your side in the R16?

When did they ditch the teardrop tailights in Australia? Could you ever get teardrop lights AND a cross flow 1565cc?

As Graham says Yes. The early TS's, specifically the 1969 and 1970 models were teardrop. From 1971 they had the rectangular ones, along with the introduction of the 16TL. All 16TL's had rectangle rear lens', the Renault 16 1470cc only ever had the teardrops, which is a good way to distinguish between a Renault 16 1470cc and Renault 16TL 1565cc. That's my understanding anyway, I've never seen any examples break the above rules but I guess there maybe a few months of crossover possible at the factory.

The Euro 16 Luxe (UK 16 De Luxe) also had a bench front seat as standard. The Grand Luxe having the individual seats. There was one of the bench seat 16s in Adelaide many years ago (circa 1980), a private import - white with mushy pea green trim. Seen once and never seen again.

Usual cliched comment from me. If it was closer and I could eyeball it, I'd probably buy it - even though I don't really need it. It makes the decision so easy :-)

I would have bought John W's R16 ages ago, but then would have been castigated for using it as my daily driver. So I didn't.
