    Default 2005 Renault Megane Sport

    Hi,

I'm looking at a possible purchase of a 2005 Megane Sport. It has a decent service history with approximately 150,000 km's on it. I am just after some opinions on this model, i've read some reviews, etc.. But keen to hear from some owners who have had some good experience with this car.

    Cheers

The Megane Sport is more refined than the Clio Sport of the same era, though I prefer the Clio's.
An 04 would make it a phase l, though I have a 08 225 Cup (phase ll) and have no complaints about it at all.
My Mrs drove the Clio for a few months then took over ownership of the Megane and called it a ladies car.
Great car, only thing I'd say is price. Depending on what asking price is, I'd rather get a later 07/08 225 Cup if there wasn't much difference in price.
Have you thought about a 175? The diesels come in the Cup set up, but they are also at the higher end of the price range.

When were the timing belt/tensioners/waterpump/harmonic balancer done? They are due every four years or 100K km (the waterpump and harmonic balancer replaced for peace of mind).

I got one 6 month or so back….Love it.

Has been totally reliable, easy to service myself and most importantly a blast to drive…Totally a wolf in sheep clothing.
Mine is the poxy metallic blue silver colour and looks like grandma's car.

Can feel like a grandma car too if you have to give grandma a lift, but let it off the leash and it will go nuts.

My one criticism is it is not very big when it comes to carting stuff. Can only imagine how much worse a 2 door clio would be though.

Apart from that though, a great little car.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies. It is relatively well priced compared to the Phase II Cup, and service history shows it has been looked after. Although one can never tell how "hard it has been driven" . I like the the idea of it being a "wolf in sheeps clothing" as Joe mentioned. I intend to drive it hard, have some fun. All legal of course I will keep you updated on my decision. Thanks again.

    Cheers

One little 'issue' that sometimes occurs, mostly when I'm held up by a right lane hog and a gap opens up……..I boot it in second gear, flat change into third an in almost no time the speed on the speedo is reading criminally high. Like get arrested and be mentioned in the newspaper type high speed.

I just cannot trust my instincts in it.
Most the driving I do now is on cruise control, even in suburban streets.
For an old car it has a pretty good cruise control.
The only time it gets a bit lumpy is at very low throttle openings (<3l/100km on the economy display) where it feels a bit like a chines cab driver…on/off/on/off throttle.

No, a black trade in at a new car dealership in Melbourne for $2430. Listed on eBay for 2 days. I went down and checked it out 1 hr before auction end, gave it a quick check over, books and 2 keys. Body straight, carpets and paint in really good condition, oil golden and clean. Recent service stamped in the log book. All electrics worked, windows, panoramic sunroof etc... Took it for a bit of a spin. Drove great, tested the shifting, and had the young sales guy pinned back in his seat a couple of times as I planted the lead foot. Felt great .
Went away, thought it over, didn't really have much to lose, so threw a bid in at the last minute. Got it. Drove it straight to a reputable French car mechanic to get checked out. Just got the word back that all it needs for roadworthy is an airbag sensor. $600. And mechanically checks out fine.

It will be the clock spring in the steering wheel hub. They all fail at some stage, although once replaced I don't think they fail again.

Even at $2400 that car is unbelievable buying. Well done

Thanks Dave, only real problem is the leather door trim on the driver and rear sides has shrunk and peeled back. Apparently from being steam cleaned by a detailer. So I'll be looking at fixing that.

Oh,and the rubber on the inside door handles will perish. Jo Proffi on here worked out the best way to fix it after much trial and error.

Oh, and there's a hidden compartment under the drivers and passenger sear carpets. Good for a first aid kit or heroin smuggling.

And your window regulators will break. Regularly.
