Driving around California he'd be well advised to put the original air filter back on with its cold air supply - they dont like sucking in hot air... And hope he doesnt find out the hard way value of the engine trays in ensuring proper airflow through the radiator at highways speeds on that long trip.

Plus the rubber plug above the radiator cap.

    Thanks for the link.

It looks like Rouge Trinidad too, just like ours. Nice story. Anyone know which of our US friends on Aussiefrogs is the owner?

I've once seen an R8 in Oz with that dash with the wood veneer, and it was a very late one for us, about overlapping with the R10 and essentially having an R10 interior, so 1966/7. Interesting that the battery is on the RHS, unless the photo is reversed of course....

Those plugs etc will have limited impact when there is no rear under tray ! I am pretty sure I can see a concrete floor under the engine when I should see an under tray.

Nice to see (reasonably mainstream) coverage of what would likely be a fairly rare car in the States.

Also with the R8, the battery swapped sides on the LHD and RHD versions.

I was thinking forzamacchi too, and no doubt he'll pop up and tell us.

Thanks Simon, I didn't know that about the battery tray swapping sides. Balance when only the driver on board I suppose!

I quite like the car in its curious state. Lots of history in the patina!

It is forzamacchi, his name is on the bottom of the article.

A couple of stand outs for me: I like the preserved paint and panel, it looks like he has applied a clear coat over all the patina.

The timber grain dash looks so good it could be real, although I can't imagine anyone would go to the expense of installing a wallnut burl veneer to a humble R8, but it does look the goods. I also like the very loud black and white contact to warn approaching traffic that the car would prefer not be run over. The bonnet straps, the signage, all goes to make this car one hell of charismatic beastie.

Every day when I wake up I reach up in the darkness with my eyes shut and if I cannot feel anything that resembles a wooden lid I know it will be a good day. No lid today.

The R10's had a similar dash. Maybe the states got this upgrade before the other markets did. Other markets got the R8 major; or R8S which has a twin gauge setup meant to replicate the sporty feel of the Gordini dash but at less cost I guess - or it could've just had the dash changed to an R10 one over the years.

The very last of the R8 1100s in Oz had that dash. I saw one in Adelaide once.

Hey Guys... It is me... This guy spotted me at a Carroll Shelby event no less. He was surprised to see such an oddity at a muscle car gathering...haha... I didn't think the content would be sold to Jalopnik and was surprised when he told me as such. Cheers for the compliments on the car...it wouldn't be on the road without you guys. @Haakon I plan on returning the under trays and introducing a proper cold air. This was a temporary set up while I sorted everything else out. The dash is original as there was quite a bit of overlap with the R10 at this point in the series. I spotted a few similar dashes in junked R10s a few years back. I haven't placed clear coat on any of the car except for the bits I decoupaged in black and white wrapping paper

    Cheers!
    Ben

That black and white contact looks like the camouflage car manufacturers wrap over their prototypes when taking them out on road test. You know, the stuff that supposed to make it hard to make out the shape.
    It actually looks very good.

That's a good idea. I have some spares, so Ben, send me your address in a PM and I'll put one in the mail. We might have to go to Quebec in 2019, so via LA seems a good idea....
