    Default WTB R8 door handles

    Hi all

I am after 2 X RHS R8 door handles. The ones I had were damaged beyond repair a few years ago and the spare set I have are the cast type.

The handles I am after are the stainless steel type, easily identified by a join line on the inside of the handle.

    See below (LHS shown)

If anyone can help please pm me.

    cheers
    Angelo

They are quite rare items.... I'll have a rummage in my "door fittings" box for you.

Looking through the various Manuals I have (R1130, R1132,36 & R1135) I am unable to tell whether the SS ones I am after are the early or later type? Or is it a matter of Aust got one version and Europe had the other?

Anyone able to shed any light on this?

I prefer the SS as they can be polished up, whereas the cast type are pitted/bubbled, and will require re-chroming (ie $$).

I think the stainless ones are R10, the other ones R8.
I may have some R10 ones, but I doubt I'd have any R8 ones. Either way though, they are currently packed away and not likely to be accessed for the next month.

Certainly my R1130 had stainless steel handles. It has a mix now, as the odd door has been replaced.

The SS ones don't accommodate the neat seal that the diecast ones have for the push button.

I think the SS ones are much better - we could start with pitting and chrome....

Yes John, found that out when I tried the Mecaparts seals to the SS handles, so the matching )plastic) seals are also needed - but found that they are fragile and need to be handled carefully.

will see what I get and make a call on what I use, but the SS are preferred. Might take a look at ebay.fr to see what I can find (unfortunately my French is not so good!)

Thanks Kevin. Will see what turns up in the next week or so, if nothing I may need to come back to you.

I don't remember my car even having seals under the SS handles, but maybe... the seals for the alloy one are a wee bit different. I'm accepting the compromise but it isn't as neat as I'd like. Perhaps better to fit the SS handles with a bead of silicone.

They do appear on ebay France occasionally, or at least have in the past.

Well, you wouldn't read about it. I have four right hand side SS ones and only need two.

We'd better exchange PMs. I have a feeling I bought a set a couple of years ago (Ebay France) as I had none for the LHS.

And I was wrong about the seals, as I have a couple of tired ones I'll keep. They are slightly different from the alloy ones. I wonder whether the R1132 cars had seals, and mine didn't have.

    Cheers

Forgot: RENAULT R8 - Poignťe extťrieur de porte droite will show one alloy example for sale. Just Renault R8 Poignee gets you there.

I'd be very careful about using a bead of silicone behind the handle, suggesting maybe mastic as an alternative because it doesn't go hard. Better still make some seals or perhaps an '”' ring from a plumbing supplier.

The stainless handles don't have the plastic ring around the button like the later die cast handles. Just a flat gasket between the handle and the door panel.

Interesting how these things evolved. I have no memory at all of a gasket for my SS door handles. However, two of the SS ones in my box of "R8 door stuff" have black plastic gaskets with an external ridge, like the alloy ones but with a very slightly different shape. It also shows that memory can play tricks: when I pulled this stuff out this morning, I had (and have) no recollection of seeing gaskets on SS handles!

And, as you say, there is definitely no ring for the button.

I too prefer the SS ones.

    cheers

That makes sense, as the SS handles have the spring to stop the rattle, whereas the cast ones used the rubber ring which was supplied with the Mecaparts gasket kit ( which as John notes is suited to the cast handles not the SS ones).
