    Default Urgent Help needed. Scenic.

Hi: It seems like the 2001 Scenic has decided that electrical issues are in fashion. The car doesn't start the engine immoboliser red light is flashing and the electrical circuit warning light (orange is flashing and the dash stop light says stop) The key opens and locks the central locking and there is a humming motor noise somewhere when ignition is turned on as well as a buzzing sound under the hood.
I would say it's the immoboliser how do I beat it? Fix it?

Is that a "card key" car, or a key-key?

key- key. I checked the battery in key and it seemed fine and it's operating all the doors fine.

    Yes, it's the key model.
I would test the battery for a dropped cell or consider swapping if old; or temporary replacement for test if thought it may be Ok.
They sometimes do strange things when they don't have enough volts left.

Geoff Check out Remote Key - Car And Van Remote Key Fobs & Immobilisers I solved an immobilizer problem with my Clio through this company. They sold me a bypass for the immobilizer and it works fine. The battery in the renault key is only for the central locking and has nothing to do with the immobilizer.I hope this helps

What Dennis said, the battery in the key is there for the remote locking only.
There is a coil around the ignition switch that picks up a signal from a passive device in the key that deactivates the immobiliser.
(If you open the key you will probably see a little coil thingy near the key blade)

A locksmith that does work on immobilisers might be able to program a key for you.
But as your car won't start you obviously can't take a car to a locksmith for them to try so you'll have to get one that does house-calls.

    Cheers

Geoff, you haven't told us the important part.

Is the starter motor cranking the engine or not?

If the starter isn't cranking the engine then forget all this rubbish about immobilisers the problem is either a crook starter or ignition switch (probably starter), or the battery is dead flat but jumper leads should fix that.

If the starter is engaging and the engine is cranking full speed and the engine sounds healthy but not firing then I'd be looking at immobilisers because they cut off fuel and spark.

Hi David: I didn't tell you the important part because it wasn't important. Thanks for your help but I did say I need advice on immobolisers as that is the problem. The starter motor is fine and cranking fine. Maybe you can advise me on stuffed immobolisers?

    Thanks
    Geoff

Ah, then it almost certainly is not "reading" the RF identifier chip in the key.

Has the key been dropped, tossed or squashed between when it was last known to work and now?

Have there been past episodes where it would crank but not catch, you'd switch the key off, switch it back on and everything was fine?

Have the airbags ever gone off?

Hi Addo: I drove home, stopped the car got out took some stuff out of boot. Opened garage door backed car in and noticed oil warning light on. Parked car in garage facing the street normally don't back the car in. Checked oil level it was fine got back in car and turned ignition on and a series of warning lights all flashed up on dash including stop, electrical fault light and red immoboliser light was flashing madly. Tried to start car and it turned over but wouldn't start and none of the warning lights or flashing immoboliser went out. Never had this problem before in 30 years of Renaults. Didn't do anything to key. Never had an airbag go off while I have owned the car three years.

Ok I'll shut up then but from here I can't tell if its cranking or not and that makes a big difference. Even if it is cranking I'd check the reset button before I'd blame the immobilizer.

The next check is whether it catches briefly on ether spray.

Not sure what that means. Nothing changes it cranks and shows no signs of firing.

If you give it a good shot of Aerostart or similar, does it actually start up for a jiffy?

P.S. You checked the cambelt didn't you?

The ether, being a VOC should allow it to run, briefly. This will confirm ignition is Ok and you are probably looking at fuel supply issue.

If it doesn't kick, then you definitely have an spark/ ignition issue.

Grab a spray can of Start- Ya- Bastard and spray into the inlet tract whilst cranking.

Maybe an AF fundraiser could be a specially labelled batch of "Démarrer tu Bâtard"?

    Hi,

I wouldn't squirt the ether in whilst cranking. Ok if the engine is not sparking. However, ether is extremely flammable. Squirt some into the inlet and then crank the motor over. No harm in being safe.

    Regards

    David

A common fix for many electrical issues (eg, odd warning lights, things not working) is to disconnect the main battery for an hour or two, even overnight, then reconnect. You would need to know your radio security code to be able to reactivate the radio.

This refers to any vehicle, not particularly the Scenic.

    Cheers.

I found a security code calculator a while back.
Can't remember where, I think it was on a P2P site I sometimes visit.
Don't know if it works, I haven't been bothered to pull out my radio to verify it works.
But of course your Renault dealer can get the code from the VIN or radio serial number.

    Cheers

Has the (main) battery been ruled out? A borderline unit can cause all sorts of hysterics

    Melc,
That was the battery I referred to in post #4 rather than the remote battery, but the OP seems to believe he has provided us as much information as we need in his original post; and appears to be shooting down any suggestions made by everyone so I'll refrain from posting further.
