    Default Protector Windscreens Closed...

Bugger. I just found out that Protector Windscreens (PGI) no longer make windscreens and have sold their old stock.

They were the only manufacturer of windscreens for older cars afaik and they had a fairly extensive catalogue.

This could mean alot of us struggle to keep our older frogs on the road, simply because we cant replace the screen.

Does anyone know of any othet suppliers?

    Their website is still on-line

Protector Autoglass (PGI) - Brisbane Automotive Windscreens & Glass Manufacturers

Are you sure it's not just a branch or distributor that has closed.

    EDIT:

    It appears you are correct:

    http://www.service8.com.au/limited-a...ass-suppliers/

Sold to person or persons unknown it would seem..

Yeah. Website goes to a 404 error.

Local number was disconnected, I phoned Brisbane head office and was told they had sold all old stock to Southern Cross Windscreens.

Manufacture seems to have stopped a while ago. Here's a bloke caught out - Windscreens - Shannons Club

He got referred to Glass for Classics in Qld and Old Skool Screens

It might be a good time to stop procrastinating if anyone needs a screen for current of future projects and buy it now.

The cost of a locally available windscreen is zip compared to buying one from OS or worse, having one specially made.

BTW, I have a hoard of Fregate windscreens taking up room at my place if anyone needs one or two or three.

Wonder what happened to the molds? There used to be one for the R8.

    This post seems most timely.

I have ordered a screen through Moore Autoglass in NSW which should arrive in about a week.

Can anyone recommend a fitter (preferable they have used) in Melbourne?

    (Sorry to hijack the thread)

Yes was Ralph Moore, but they don't fit in Melb, but gave me a name who could do it, but was very circumspect to fit it as I was supply the glass and not him and was not willing to warrant his work in case glass broke.
anyway through the help of an AF I have another person who should be able to do it without any fuss.

Ralph's screens were coming from the UK.
Do you know where yours came from?

That's correct - my "once new" one is a UK Pilkington. Mine was fitted perfectly well by the local Windscreens O'Brien guy. Older, Irish guy who'd worked on them in Dublin if I recall! Something nice like that.

I think we'll always be able to get them in our lifetimes, but the cost won't be palatable in the future.

Its one from the UK Pilkington.

i have now managed to secure a decent window fitter, so should be all done in a week or two.

[I had a new screen made for my Caravelle 2 years ago, it was a most reasonable $270. Contact P&H Jennings Wetherill Park Sydney. Tel: (02) 9725 4774

    No. No certainly no hijack.

It's good to have a few options for those who are struggling to find a screen through the regular channels.

Wow that's not good, they were terrific when I needed a windscreen for the Floride, made one using my old one as a mold.
At the time I could not get a screen from anyway.

Just called P&H Jennings and Peter says that they do not and have never manufactured windscreens (unless able to be cut from a flat piece). He did though say if it was a windscreen that was done (for Chris) then it may have been cut from another (larger) screen that may have come from another car (ie say commodore) which had a similar curvature.

Peter was quite knowledgeable and explained that ADR for laminated screens first came into Aust when the VB Commodore came in (1979?) but before that it was not mandatory, so the toughened glass variety would still be legal. He spoke about some toughened glass having zones in which vision through a in an area directly inform of the driver will not fracture in small pieces, maintaining vision in case of a window breakage.

He then went on to mention there was a place in SA that may still manufacture windscreens, but failing this, it will need to be imported from Europe or Asia.

Unless you are going for maximum concours points with an old car, an old type toughened, or zone toughened screen is not really worth considering. And for concours you would then need the correct original markings etc etc.

For anything else, especially competition (where I don't think a toughened 'screen is allowed), go laminated. Then you have peace of mind the screen isn't going to shatter into a million tiny pieces, it'll just take ages to get all those bits out of the heater ducting......
