I think there is a little bit of bias there David. I vote for a better Fugeo picture.

Well , David has carefully selected a clearly forgotten Fuego in the Amazon forrest to compare to a hunkered down rally spec. !7 .
It,s obvious that the average Aussie frogs forum dweller with petrol in their veins will pick the 17 but in the 80,s , Fuego,s were being scooped up in relatively large numbers by newsagents/hairdressers and such like . Now next time you are sitting in the barbers chair , start this conversation !!!!!

If you are going to compare the Fugeo with a phase two 15 or 17, even with girl as garnishing, then even David's scrappy old Fugeo wins hands down. IMHO phase two's were really ugly.

Bias? Don't know what you mean. That's how all 17's and Fuego's look through my eyes.

Ok Ok Lets be fair. We'll restricted it to only Australian delivered cars. No US spec Fuego's or Mk 2 R15/17's

Have a look at these 2 and admit the 17 is the better looking.

Is that photo of the 17 taken through a fish eye lense or is does the front just look that big and ugly all the time?

    Nice paint and stickers though...

Bit fairer so I vote for the 17. However a side view of a Fugeo is definitely more modern and almost timeless. The 17's do look to be from their age. I like cars from the 50's to the mid 70's so Fugeo's don't really make it for me. To be fair I did like my wife's Fug when she had it.

    Really? You only just noticed?

The 17 is still ugly though.

The fact you need to find a freshly painted, lowered, wide wheeled stickered up R17 to compare to a tired old Fuego (the example of which I sorta own/disown) kinda does your argument no good...

Distnctive? Certainly. Attractive? I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I personally prefer the 15 with it's bigger glasshouse and slender pillars.

The 17 just looks heavy handed and disproportionate to me. If there wasn't a G version, I'm not sure there would be much love for them.

The 17 (and 15 ) had sleeker more balanced lines . The fuego was interesting at the time, had a good dash / interior and a great engine but looks a bit plasticky and bulky now.

I think the Fug overdid a bit the sloped front end/headlights and that's what makes it look dated. Look at an Opel Manta, and you'll see how to do it in style and in a way that doesn't date, but gets better with age. The rear end works very well today and I don't think it's going to date.

The 17 is looking very nice from certain angles, but not so much from others. The 15 has a nicer roof line curve side-on without the clumsy kink above the rear window and the countersloped C-pillar which creates conflicting lines around the rear quarter above the waistline. A 17 front end (four headlights) on a 15 body would have the best of both. There's just no competition for the airy feel of the 15 with glass all around.

In the same (15-17) design style and with vast expanses of glass all around bordered by the minimum thickness pillars, the Fiat 124 Coupe has found perfection (I am talking about the AC/BC versions, the CC is ugly - another good example of ruining perfection by cutting corners to save pennies and creating conflicting lines - have a look at the rear end) and looks as great today as ever. Nearly the same design as the Renault coupes, bar the recessed (a stroke of genius) vertical rear panel rather than the (again) sloped 17/15 design with a tall, oh, so late-seventies, today uninspiring fibreglass (the latest innovation back then, I suppose) bumper. They should have stuck with a thin, discrete but distinctive chrome bumper mirroring the front, like the Fiat, or perhaps a two-piece affair a la early Manta Ray Corvettes.

Yeah, I have a 17 and every time I walk around it, I wonder what if.

Nar, it's a just showing off the classic lines of a 70's coupe compared to how bad the went in only 10 years.

One of the best cars I ever owned was just that. It was a 15 with 17 headlights and rear spoiler, also had a Fuego gearbox (the only good thing about a Fuego) and a mild cam so it looked great and went well.

I'm with Dave of course too.
So I guess that keeps up the 100% vote for R17's.
I've had both cars and have to say the Fuego's I've had would be right up there on my shit Renault list.
Massive blind spots, aquaplaning in the wet, crap electronics, weak aircon, speedo dials that break, Gas struts in the boot and bonnet that fail, seats that collapse, seat releases that snap, underpowered, weird tyre sizes and driven by hairdressers and people that traded up to a Toyota Celica.
I mean really - they can't even run up Rob Roy without a failure :-)
Geez I can't wait for Dave's housewarming? Better get an Octagon for the UFC Championship bout.
    Regards,
    R17's rock
