    Default Rumors, rumors rumors.

Any of you blokes heard the rumor that a 4WD R12 sedan was being rallied in central NSW? Years ago, probably back in the 70's / 80's

    Lets keep it going!

I distinctly remember doing a double take at the KFC in Taree (on the pacific highway) where a R12 was reverse parked, I could have sworn there was a diff hanging in the middle..

But that was 20yrs ago, it was dusk, and I was 11

There are two KFC outlets in Taree, no excuses now..
Every day when I wake up I reach up in the darkness with my eyes shut and if I cannot feel anything that resembles a wooden lid I know it will be a good day. No lid today.

I think we need to launch a dawn raid at the Kent property to see what missing treasures are hidden therein..

The RCCA club editor (Bob Sprague) went on a tour of Barry Stennarts (sp?) wrecking yard a few years ago and wrote an article on the day for the Hub. I'm fairly certain he mentioned a 4wd R12 of some description; or a twin engine contraption of some sort. I'll send him a message and see if I can clarify the story.

It was NOT an R10 however!

Many years ago, 1987/8 I sold an r17 to a bloke who had 4wd r12. The story was that he was from the UK and had owned an R17 4wd but had rusted out so he put the drivetrain into an r12 that from memory he may have rallied. He planned to transfer the bits back into the R17.

I'm not not sure if he bought the car out to Australia as an R12 or R17.

I saw it up on the hoist at Alpine Motors in Canberra. It was a very simple affair, what looked like a 5 speed box with with the tail shaft exiting where 5th gear would be. From memory again, it was a 4speed box. I think the car was track yellow.

That's making sence. Story we got told is that it's been written off. It's in Holbrook NSW lying upside down in a paddock. A friend grabbed the diff and tailshaft but motor and box are already gone.

The diff and shaft are here in Melbourne, I haven't seen it bit I have photos. It's a strange looking thing, a solid axle with coil springs. At first we were thinking Dacia but not sure. My Dacia has leaf springs where this is coil and it's designed to bolt into a standard R12 shell without and mods. There's even a bracket for the centre wishbone.

The body is an import, there are no identifying numbers on it suggesting it's not Australian.

Does anyone know if there are any Sinpar's here. There are no identifying numbers or stamps on the diff. The only thing I can think off is that it's a Sinpar conversion but I've never heard of one (or seen one) out here.

What a shame the box is gone.

Can someone expand on the rumour that Caravelle imports did a batch of six modified Florides.
Is it true and what were the modifications?
Do any still exist, and where can I find one?

Only that Norm Wray (Caravelle's founder) was doing Florides after he retired and sold the business. He had a little workshop where he was building Florides to customers orders. We got a couple after he died, one was 16TS powered.

I thought a small batch of R17 4wds were made for rallying purposes - Paris Dakar, maybe? Technically I think they were AWD as I recall no linkage to disconnect the back wheels.

Dave your description of the rear axle is as I remember it. A simple live axle pretty much where the beam went on the standard R12s. And trailing arms, am I imagining it? I think they existed and located the axle in the usual fashion.

    P

These may have paved the way for R18 GTS estate that had a 4wd option

That's fascinating and thanks Col. It is almost as interesting as his view that it doesn't have much rust other than surface stuff. Scroll down and look at the pictures... Aaaargghh. There's something different about scale of rust development in UK from our perspective.
