    Default Weird Renault 12

This has to be the strangest looking R12 drive train set up anyone has ever seen.

Its a copy of the Sinpar R12's, except dacia used leaf springs instead of coils.

Dacia produced many 4x4 utes. Maybe it's from one of them.

    It's actually not even Dacia.

Another Romanian company called Aro (stands for Auto Romania) built the 4x4 system for Dacia to use in the 1304 pickup. It's extremly rare, my car being 1 of only about 2800 made. Most pickups were 2wd.

In 2wd mode it's rear wheel drive with a dog clutch set up to engage the front wheels

Here it is in it's early days working hard as our delivery vehicle.

    That's great.

    Now give it 300hp and squeeze it all under a 12 / 15 / 17

Your custom license plate could read,

With running gear as rare as this I'm more likely to go the other way and stick an 1100cc R10 motor in it.

It'll stay original with a 1397cc but I'm using a weber instead of the single throat Romanian thing it came with.

If I fully register it (probably go club plates) the rego will be DACIA.

Yeah good thinking. Much easier to set the Weber up for the big Turbocharger...

You'd trash the driveline due to axle windup. It needs a center diff to drive on sealed roads with 4wd engaged

hi Dave, your Dacia gearbox is a different set up to my Aro 10 in that mine uses a transfer box(consequently it has high/low range) at the rear of the gearbox and a short driveshaft (two r10 uni joints splined together) to a separate diff mounted under the bellhousing out via driveshafts to free wheeling hubs. Was r12 engine but fitted r18 with modified 16ts crossflow head into it,that was 18 years ago and never fired up engine. As vehicle has sat around since and body is rusting I sold engine, so it sits languishing with me hot and cold as to what to do with it. I had thougts of sitting my rusty floride body on it,as it runs the same wheel base, but there is not much solid metal left in the lower sections of the floride.Any way its third in line of projects. Jim

I think R18 had a 4x4 version, is your contraption anything like the driveline in that, Dave?

I think that R18 had more power than the R12, so perhaps pretty safe to up it a bit. I would be so tempted to stick a 12G engine in it like you can't believe. Needs some weight on the rear though.

Oh, and Alfa 33 had a 4wd version as well (but I think that was FWD and dog clutch to the rear). Brilliant car, that.

As was stated earlier, the gearbox has no center differential so its only really suitable for low speed on loose surfaces. The thing would bind up and tear itself to bits driving on dry asphalt.

The 21 quadra was a constant awd with a center split to the rear wheels built into the gearbox. Not sure about the 18.

When it was in daily service we were thinking of an 18. Wouldn't go 12G no way.
Traction is quite bad even with a 1.4. Something with torque and low revs would be good.

But......I know this may sound dumb and boring and most of you wont get it but I'm going to keep it standard and go with the 1.4 so under the bonnet it'll look like a Virage. Boring aren't I.

As far as I can tell this is made by Aro for Dacia. It's not an off the shelf Aro gearbox so that's why I'd like to be careful. We've rebuilt it once already, can't remember what happened but my clever brother dismantled it and found it was something from another planet so he rebuilt it using R12 parts.
