Default Mystery brakes on R12. What do I have?

Mystery brakes on R12. What do I have?-20151025_123724_hdr%5B1%5D.jpg

    Hi all,

I have decided to refresh the brakes on my R12 while waiting on a refreshed engine. My Renault brake knowledge, such as it is, starts and finishes with the R8, R8G, R10, 10S family.

In my ignorance I expected to see a solid disc at the front, of about 10 mm thickness. What I have is a vented disc of 20 mm thickness and an unfamiliar calliper (I'm guessing aftermarket but don't know new-fangled Renault after the 60s!).

The car has had at least 3 prior owners and a hard history in S.A. of doing more than going to the shopping. This set up could date from anywhere in the last 30+ years.

Does anyone recognise what I have?

    Thanks, Keith

Like Simon says they are R15TS/17TL/17TS brakes. The calipers are Bendix. They are nothing special, just the standard upgrade the lots of people do to their R12's

Thanks Simon & Col. That makes life simpler in the search for bits (and a reasonable choice for a car getting closer to 12G replica outfitting).

And if no one recalls a Renault 15TS/17 in the model search, just say they are 12 Gordini, as all those models use the same front brakes.

Why the DBA on the caliper?

Is this the Australian brake mob DBA? Was it part of upping local content? Would have been early in the DBA history if this is so.

DBA Lockheed as opposed to Disc Brakes Australia, which are different firms.

Sorry about that for some reason I had Bendix in my head. Go with what Simon said

They are also 54mm in diameter if you need to buy seals for them.

Make sure that the seals are not for the smaller 48mm R12 calipers

R15/17 were not assembled here. All cars are fully imported so no local content.

If you or anybody else wants to sell a pair of those mounting brackets please contact me.

Sorry, don't want to hijack your thread but the photo clearly shows what I can't find.

Oh and if you decide to rebuild them, mark them first as they're paired, you'll need to make a wedge or spreader bolt to open the steel outer jaw enough for the alloy caliper piston to slip out. Think carefully about that though because there could be too much corrosion that once cleaned the jaw no longer pinches the piston part tightly enough. There's also a spring loaded lock pin that can be corroded and won't co-operate.

Just the cast iron brackets without the calipers? This may be a useless reply, but I'm pretty sure I've got a pair, but will have to check tomorrow night. They came off a 17TL 25 years ago, and I can't recall if they have been moved on or not.

Yes it's just the brackets that I'm after. I've got the calipers.

As I had sort of earlier anticipated, I later recalled that it was one that had actually found another home. So I've found the other one, it's available if you want to take a chance of finding another one or two later on......

I think they are pretty much the same as the R12.
