    Default 10S Question

My 10S is about to go in for a long overdue full respray, and i just need some pics or information on the rear quarter panel black strip. Does it meet the stainless trim piece or stop just short? And was the black stripe originally satin or matte finish?
    Any help appreciated 😊

The attached pic from a period Wheels magazine should help. My thoughts would be to use satin, it will be easier to take care of, and looking at the pic below there is more of a sheen to the finish than matt.

Definitely Satin finish, not matt. I will photo mine in the morning for you (also co-incidently Sunburst colour). I believe yours stops too short at the rear. I bought mine new in SA (Ron Spurling Motors) on Sep 28th 1970, my first new car!
    Enjoy

    Default 10S stripe front

    10S Question-10s-may-1971.jpg

Taken in northern Flinders May school hols 1971. Car 8 months old, original paint. Sure it is satin. Sure it wraps at rear to meet shiny brightwork across rear panel.

    Thanks Keith,

Also did the 10S originally have the 8 style hubcaps? The original brochure appears to have 10 hubcaps and my car and Keiths car both have 8 style hubcaps!

Believe you may have misread my old B & W photo with its shadows. My car, and the brochure, and I think your car have the 10 hubcaps. These are smaller diameter and fit inside the "ridge". The R8 one are large diameter and go over the "ridge"

    cheers,

Off on a tangent Keith, but whatever happened to the "Cape York" R10?
Is it safely tucked away or moved on?

The hubcaps fitted to the 10S are part of the Australian local content. They are the same cap as fitted to the same era 16, and replaced the earlier 10 type hubcap.

Looking nice 'n' shiny there Keith I think that colour looks great on a 10S with the optional stripe. It's good to see what yours will look like Anthony

Correct - and I've never seen R8-style hubcaps fitted correctly to an R10. I altways thought the rim profiles, where the hubcaps fit, are subtly different from one model to the next.

When i bought my 10S it had 8 hubcaps fitted to the 10S original wheels, which are in the shed awaiting reconditioning (hence the fats&#128521 So these hubcaps are also the same as early 16 caps? What did the 10S leave the factory with?

As per my Black & white photo. Still have them. Same also as my 1970 R10

Yes KB, safely tucked away. I am very poor at parting with cars. Only did it once (1987) and still haven't psychologically recovered!
Still hoping for circumstances to allow another long drive in it.

Not to my knowledge Haakon. I bought it off Potenz, he bought it off a lady who had left it in her shed for 10 years as she couldn't start it - turned out to be a faulty starter motor! Both were SA owners, I have quite a comprehensive service history all in SA.

There was also a similar thread not long back where Renosprite was looking for a set of 10S hubcaps. Someone took a good photo of Ben Emmelkamps' 10S's hubcaps at a Renault event and posted it. His is an original car without stripe (which was a dealer delete option I believe) that came from the central coast (Brian Hilton motors I think). Search for posts from Renosprite in both Renault forum and For Sales/Wanted and you may find it.

    Thanks KB,

The hubcaps on the left are the ones that came with the car and are the proper 10S caps. After the paint I'm getting the 10S 4.5inch wheels reconditioned by Extensive Wheels here in Adelaide, and I've just realised their value after seeing a pair on eBay at the moment for $490 starting price!

It seems that all the late 1970 R10 & R10S were fitted with R16 hub caps.

Me thinks they may of ran out of the R10 type and fitted the R16 units as production was coming to an end. They were a poor fit, and distored as they were tightened.

We bought our R10S new in August 1970 and it had the R16 type, in which 2 fall off while under new car warranty.
The dealer gave us 2 R10 type hub caps and told us to put them on one side, and no one will notice?

I don't think anyone did notice.

Ours was white with the black stripe and I think it was satin and running all the way to the rear trim, as the rear photo here showed.

    Regards, Steve.

Cool. I always did wonder what happened to that car. It was a lovely original car when my brother got it in the late 90's with a nice patina, but unfortunately he got suckered into a mates rates job that turned out very horrible...

Hmm. The one on the left is definitely an R8 hubcap. It really is. I think Steve is probably right - 16 hubcaps as they'd run out of 10 ones!
