Default Renault 5 gt turbo vrs Renault Megane Rs....

Hey guys I am debating selling my R5 gt turbo and buying a Megane rs what do you guys reckon??

Should I just keep the Renault 5 gt turbo for its uniqueness and the fact I do drive it say once every couple of months but it puts a huge grin on my face when I do drive it and get compliments every were I go...

The Megane I am thinking will be a daily driver and maybe weekend warrior like the R5. just don't waan end up with loads of cars again I was thinking seeling my Hummer or trading it in and selling the R5 turbo for the extra cash I will need....

Someone said to me definition of a great car is the one that puts a smile on your face. Keep the 5 says I.

I reckon keep the 5. It's such a good example and is so unique and cool. Especially in Australia.

I take you to have two main roles for cars:

One is everyday transport and the other is as a public-road fanging toy.

Let's address the toy role first.

For this, I submit, the key attributes are not so much sheer speed & capability but having a suite of qualities which allow the car to be driven at its limit on a public road yet not become unmanageable - all this while being tactile & engaging in the way it drives. I would judge the Megane RS to be vastly more capable in any situation than the R5 but, in virtue of that, harder to be on its limits on a public road, less manageable when those limits are transgressed & very much less tactile & engaging.

So, what of the daily driver role?

I'm not sure what your daily drive involves & why the R5 is not deemed apt but my "daily drive" is a 50 km round trip from the semi-rural outskirts of Launceston, through the city & out the other side to my University's campus here & return - sometimes with diversions to shop, run errands & so on. For this drive, I cycle through the toys. For years my 58 4CV & 79 Moke, then my mother's 66 R8 was added (when she carked it) & finally the 66 Djet was added. None of them any more as they left the manufacturer but none of them modern (although the Moke & R8 were bought new). All of this seems without a problem; mind you, that drive includes the first special stage of Targa Tasmania which tilts things in favour of toys.

The RS seems to me to be not matched to the daily drive function as well as other choices & less suited as a toy than the R5. Mind you, if the R5 really can't be a daily driver despite my experience, the Megane could sort of do that job & a toy job as well. So, one compromise car doing two tasks. Is this progress? Maybe; but what of the Hummer. I have no idea why you have one but assume that you have some call for 4WD - a third role then. (So do I & have on old FJ 55 for that.)

If you're into consolidation of the fleet so that 2 cars do 3 roles then I'd get rid of the Hummer in a flash & consolidate 4WD & daily driver roles with a second hand, reliable lowish kms Forester. So, say, a 2005-2006 (first of the 2.5 models) with around 120k kms for around $10-13k. My wife has had two of them now & they are even a decent enough steer (not something I'd say of its successor, which I drove as a uni fleet car).

That way, you get to keep the R5 as a toy.

    cheers! Peter

Good way of looking at it Peter just I never really drive the 5 its great when I do get it out turns sooo many heads hey..

I bought the Hummer on a whim lol I don't even go off road or the beach just pose in it!! don't wanna get it dirty!!

I am gonna have to think long and hard about this as I know I will regret selling the 5 (Like I do with all my 205 gtis) but with 5 unlike the 205 gti's cant be replaced so easily at all were as there is always 205s for sale and plenty essentially too choose from were as r5 turbos there is none!!

I am kidn of answering my own topic in the fact really I should keep it and use it more and not keep buying chrome bits or new parts that aren't really needed....

The Hummer drinks fuel like its going out of fashion :-( The wrx wagon I bought is an auto for the wife to drive when she drives (not very often) and the golf vr6 is my other fixer/upper project...

Could the VR6 not be completed and assume daily driver duties. Sell the hummer and keep the R5GTT.
Alternatively, you can buy VT, VS etc Commodores for peanuts these days as a run around.

I'd say you have been converted.
Forget about your poogoats and any other makes.
Renaults, the R5t and MeganeRS are and will be the only cars you'll need, though a rear engined Renault should be included at some stage to complete the collection.

Yeah waiting on a coilpack for the vr6 and then just a good thorough service and its a daily easily :-)

I am thinking now may just trade the Hummer ona older Megane RS ie 2011 ish get the golf ready for sale and sell it keep the R5 then use megane as daily and r5 for the shows... The wrx is really for the Mrs to drive as its an auto and she can only drive auto..

The good thing about the Mrs only being able to drive an auto, is that you don't have to share your toys.
