That is another great looking car, Arthur.

Any more detail about it? Did you have to strengthen the shell ?

    Hi Arthur,

When you see the car in action, it gives it a whole new dimension.

    Very nice, and well done.

    Thank you Frans.

    Default Leigh Day - Canberra R8 1965

Whilst everyone seems to be nostalgic, I was looking through my old mans collection of documents recently and found a few old Canberra Sporting Car Club magazines.
On the back of one was an R8 combined Shell ad for a local garage. As attached. Does anyone know more of Leigh Day in Canberra in 1965 and the car?

Loved the motorkahna photo. Brought back memories of flag and barrel events. In my case I had a motorkhana special/race car back in the early 1960's and the event involved the driver picking a flag on a long stick out of a 200 litre drum and racing perhaps a 100 metres to another drum and dropping the flag into it going back getting another and so on in the quickest time. Bit of a problem for me in a very low car with the seat only 75 - 80 mm from the ground. Great fun but obviously not allowed today. My car was probably one of the early motorkhana specials.

Here is a photo of my wife and I competing in a navigator pick up back in the 1980's. I don't think it is a motokhana test these days.

Our Club President, one Ken Taylor, suffered three broken ribs leaning out of the window in a flag and barrel race....probably a good reason to drop the event from regular use on uneven paddock surfaces?
    It's another lovely day! Again!

At the time John we were members of the RCCA and the VWC. This was at a VWC event at their grounds in Plumption near Blacktown NSW, all houses now I would think. Great times back then but thinking back, yes a bit dangerous. The wife was a real dare devil!

If you can be more specific as to the location, I could cruise by and take a few "now" pictures for then & now type shots.

Just a thought, if Karin's keen you could always recreate the shot using your Gordini on Sunday!!

I know about where it was but would never find it now. I think it was Hill End lane off Richmond Rd, then about 1km +- on the left. You had to turn into a farm past the house and some sheds and it was in one of the paddocks. The VWC also had another venue at Box Hill, I pass it on my way to my sisters place at times and its all houses now.
I don't think Karin is as flexible now as she was back then (and the shirt won't fit) to recreate the photo.
I'll bring some photos from the old VWC venues on Sunday.

I'll cruise by and take a look. If it's Hill End Rd, technically it should be Doonside rather than Plumpton but the same general area.
I used to visit people on the south end of Hill End Rd who were stallwarts in the Datsun Drivers Club (which later became the Nissan/Datsun Drivers Club). They were the Sosimenko's for anyone wondering.

I've often been confused by the Renault blue.

    For the R8 Fans-blue.jpg

turns out I'm not the only one

Which one is right. Place bets now.

There were 3 shades of blue for the R8 Gordini. The 1100s (R1134) is Blue 418 (as was the 12 Gordini). The first 2 batches of Australian R1135s were Cannes Blue, whilst the 3rd & 4th batches were Moyen Blue.

The 1100 blue in Australia was as the cars were supplied in Europe, 418, but the 2 blues on the 1300 (1135) was an Australian colour.

But the blue supplied on the European 1300 (1135), was also known as 418, but was Bleu Gordini or Azure Competition, and was a shade lighter than the 1134 418 code. I got my sprayed sample from a Renault bodyman I know in ZA, who worked for Renault South Africa. As sprayed on Graeme's Gordini.

    Ray

PS. Sorry there was also a darker blue available in Europe, but very few sold, as people wanted "genuine Racing Bleu".

I doubt any of these cars have survived 50 years without being re painted at least once.
Get 2 spray painters to mix the same colour using the same code and I bet you will get 2 different shades.
From the left in photo 2- Car 1 and 3 are Moyen blue. 2, 4 and 5 are Cannes Blue.

    Hi Paul,
I would say you are correct, as I have seen that happen when a colour is mixed off of one car to be sprayed on another, See them in the sun after and there is a distinct difference.
