Default Megane RS Turbo not kicking in

Son's car displayed this symptom on a hot day, car with four passengers, going uphill @110km/h. Found throttle died at about 2-2.5k RPM when the turbo should have kicked in. Fuel consumption quite poor as well.

Cold weather returned car to normal and no problem since.

No fault codes or any other relatable symptoms (warning lights, etc).

What was the problem? Is the turbo dying?

Could be something completely unrelated but I had similar problem with my Volvo (yes I know... ). Turned out to be the radiator half blocked so the engine ECU limits the amount of boost to prevent the engine from overheating. The coolant temperature gauge in the car went slightly higher than middle point where it would normally sit.

Dying turbo normally develops noise and dump some oil into the exhaust, no?

Without sounding like a smart-arse, the car you describe has a built-in diagnostic system accessible to all Renault dealers. Perhaps your son and heir should consult one?

This potentially is a MAF issue, can't see much else if the performance is now more "normal". I'd check all turbo piping on the pressure side for hidden splits.

Thank you very much guys, all is very helpful.

I know diddly about these cars and my son is not very financial at the moment.

Not sure where to send him in Melvegas? Someone knowledgeable?

Kim, if there was a problem logged by the ECU, wouldn't the engine light go off?

The light only comes on with certain faults. Other situations outside "normal" may not trigger it.

If you think he's due a Christmas present from yourself, send him to Kenny at Auto Paris.

Oops, I thought Schlitz was calling Melville WA 'Melvegas' for a joke, because he's from WA himself. Ignore my post...

I recently bought a obd which is simular to the mechanics use off ebay for around $10 the download touque tech for another 5$ not that i intend playing with megane turbo. Could be worth a try for little outlay to identify the fault code

Sounds like a fuel pump starting to give up.
Mine did something similar at the start, got gradually worse especially in hot weather. I replaced the plugs and then the coils which didn't fix it

My sons Megane 225 had a similar problem in that up hills it lost power particularly when hot. Turned out to be a short pipe that had a couple of valves on it and was cracked where it joined on to one of the valves. We tried taping it up to prove the point but even that didn't work. A new one fixed the problem.

I guess it will depend on who's open. Paul at Auto Paris in Box Hill is our closest /best.My son takes his 225 Cup there and our Megane. Plug it in and it will tell the tale.
