I decided to replace the rear wheel bearings.
Just as well! One side had the seal spring wrapped around the axle & is missing half its balls!
I use a Litchfield puller left over from VW days and while the better bearing came out easily, the bad one didn't budge. Instead the axle went back into the transmission!
What's going on? Is this a sneaky Gallic booby trap? Every other axle I've worked on is bedded into the planetary gears on the diff & can only go in so far till it stops.

    Default All good!

The axle this side was much looser & had drifted out.

I just tapped it back gently with a plastic mallet to see how far it would go & it eventually bedded in after which the puller worked.

And there were no balls missing but the non-metallic cage supporting them had disintegrated.
