    Default 17TL vs 17TS crank

Hi all, I don't happen to have the manuals for the ts and tl, so wondered if someone could enlighten me about the differences in the crankshaft between the 17TL engine that is in my12, which has the pulley running off the crankshaft, and the standard 16TS crank. I want to change the timing chain cover from the standard 17TL to a 16TS/17TS (which I already have) to remove he pulley and belt retainers that poke out to allow for more clearance for fans. Is there a difference between the TS and TL crank shafts in terms of how the crank end tming gear is retained?
    Cheers

The difference in the 16TS & 17TL crankshafts is that the 17TL is 3mm longer than the 16TS crankshaft.

to replace the pulley is a spacer and a washer and then the bolt to hold it all together.

I don't think you can just remove the pulley and swap timing covers because the crankshaft is to long.
I have used an R16TS crankshaft in an R17TS block and this works fine.

    Hope this answers your question.
If you would like some pages scanned from the parts books PM me your email and I will forward them to you.

    Hi David

Did you use the spacer, washer and bolt from the R17TS? or did you manufacture your own?

    Hi Col

It was many years ago but if I could take a guess we did not put a bolt back in the crank shaft.

It does answer the question thanks Col.
I have taken the timing cover off to inspect it and found that I thought it was troo long, but was hesitant to replace the cover without the bolt and spacer in place in case the 16/17TS crank had a collar that locked the crank end timing gear in place. Not that it should be able to find its way forward and off the key, but if it were able to do so it would be at teh very least a very bad thing.
It can probably wait until rebuilt time before I change the crank over to the TS crank.
    Cheers

If thats the motor I'm thinking about, it now has a R16TS crank and timing cover on it.

It was the motor that had the crack in the water jacket behind the starter motor.

The only motors that I have bought are 2 R17TS (Gordini) that came with a 365 box R17TS disc brake rear end and injection stuff and they came from Brisbane.

And the other was a R17TL motor that came with a 4 speed box that had a blown sun gear in the diff. But I can't remember where that came from.

    Both lots were Ebay purchases.

R20 Diesel rear disc brakes are the same as R17TS/G brakes. Not generally available in Aust but might find them on Ebay France. The discs are the same as the fronts from an R12 I believe.
