    Default 956cc Vs 10S 8 Port Head

    Hi All,

I got a couple of 1108cc engines in the shed with 8 port heads. I haven't taken the heads off to check valve sizes but is there any way to check if it's a 10S head or a 956cc head externally? I want to put one on my white 10 with a 10S manifold and Weber down draught. Any advise appreciated.

I don't know the answer, but each head should have a part number cast into it (may need to remove rocker cover to see it).
I would write down those numbers first off each motor and see how they compare. Is the 10S you have original wrt engine and head - maybe compare casting numbers to those?

The 10S detail doesn't appear in the French Renault parts books as far as I am aware

I have a feeling the later 8-port heads have at least one extra casting protrusion than the 956 variety. The 10S head on my R8 has two bosses that stick out between spark plugs "1 and 2" and "3 and 4", the boss between 3 and 4 having a threaded hole and the other one blank.

I don't think the early heads had those bosses.

I'd add that the early heads are pretty rare, so the odds are that the ones you have are indeed 10S. But you might be lucky!

All the parts are there, the mechanical bits (engine and gearbox) are R1136 R8S, the rest is normal R10 R1190, so you need both the late (3rd Partie) edition of the R8 catalogue, and the R10 catalogue. The dashboard instruments (and safety bump rims) are the only uniquely Australian bits not listed in the French catalogues.
